Hip carrier to use while pushing pushchair? Or something else?

I'm looking for recommendations. I have a 12 month old (she's quite hefty for her age, around 25lb) who has nearly grown out of the baby carrier we have.

I mostly put her in the pushchair when out and about but I have a 4yo with SEN who sometimes needs to go in the pushchair. This is much less than 50% of the time so I don't want to go back to the double, and up until now I've just kept our baby carrier in the bag so I can stick the baby in it when the 4yo needs the pushchair.

If you have a hip carrier, can you push a pushchair while wearing one? If so do you recommend yours? Or any other suggestions for something that can carry my baby while I push my 4yo?

Thank you in advance.

I have a Gooseket toddler carrier, but do you really still need one hand in their back for
support. If you have a light enough pushchair that can be steered one handed it could work though!

I think Gooseket are Korean so it took a while to arrive (no custom fees though) but I have seen some on Vinted :)

I have a loveradius carrier that does hip, front and back. It's got a long body, so the reviews reckon it will work in rucksack mode until 4!

ETA: I think relying on a hip carrier is a recipe for crippling yourself. It'll knacker your back, hips and knees if you do it often

Wearing the 1 year old in the carrier on your back would be much better for you. If she's growing out of the baby carriers then try a toddler carrier from Tula.

Definitely get a back carrier. Tula or Ergobaby are great and will do the job for years to come if need be

I did this and tbh it destroyed my back. I would really not recommend it unless you were some kind of superhuman weightlifter before having kids (and had no issues like a prolapse). Leaning over to push a buggy whilst having a weight on your back or side is not sensible.

Stick with the double a while longer or get a bike trailer that doubles as a buggy.

I would suggest a back carrier.

Or, could the 4 yr old use a buggy board?

mamagogo1 · 20/09/2025 15:06

Back carrier is easier but will your 4 year old allow your younger one to sit on their lap - this is what we did though admittedly younger dc was 2.5 when we got rid (brokeConfused) the double buggy. The mamas and papas single lasted until they were 4&6 often with both sitting in it for ease, i didn’t drive then

It's worth looking on Vinted for carriers. I got a couple of different ones all for about 10 to test. They're crazy expensive new if you're not sure what you want, and whilst testing them in the shop is fine, you don't find you hate them until you've used them for a bit
