Does anyone on here believe in The 10 Commandments being displayed in classrooms?

And if so, why? And if so, why The 10 Commandments, not The Beatitudes?

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 20/09/2025 14:13

Is someone actually suggesting that this should happen?

ManyATrueWord · 20/09/2025 14:16

Educational best practice now is not to clutter up the walls with distractions. So no.

No. We don't need children to be seeing words like 'murder' in front of them every day.

Which commandment contains that word?

True. Wait 10 minutes and 'educational best practice' will have changed again though. It will probably be 'all displays should be in relaxing pastel colours' or in a specific font. Or changed every second Tuesday of the month or something.

Religion doctrine of any sort does not belong in schools. If you want to teach your children that your choice of “god” exists then do it at home

keepthecake · 20/09/2025 14:42

Any background OP?

Parker231 · 20/09/2025 14:46

No - should be total separation of church and state

Pollqueen · 20/09/2025 14:49

Well they are decent tenants to live by so can't really see the problem

Notagain75 · 20/09/2025 14:50

No of course not, unless it is a church school

They're not really relevant in my maths classroom though.

I'd prefer:

  1. Shut up
  2. Listen
  3. Learn

The background is that it’s becoming standard practice in the States- and I was hoping there might be someone on here who could
explain why it’s considered a good idea. My personal view is that there should be a complete separation of Church and State, and there is already too much entanglement in this country. I do worry that the right wing Christianity that is growing in the States is likely to spread this way. Also, the Commandments seem incredibly inappropriate for young children when, if we have to have anything, the much more suitable Beatitudes are there, ready and waiting.

Have you read them?

Absolutely not. I don’t want any religion in schools, thanks. There are other places for it, if you want that in your life.

After all, the first 4 are about worshipping a Christian god. And another 2 are about not killing and not committing adultery, which don’t seem very suitable for children…..

You don’t think it’s good for kids to know that people shouldn’t kill or commit adultery? Or that people worship deities?

Bonden · 20/09/2025 15:11

I don’t see why the Virtues aren’t posted in schools as these are pretty well found in all religions.

It isn't just saying "people worship deities" though, is it? It's saying "you must worship this specific deity from this specific religion".

On the wall of an RE classroom as part of a display about commandments and instructions in different religions? Fine.

On the wall of a maths classroom, just because? Absolutely not.

Many of us are atheists so don’t follow any religious beliefs

HelloClouds · 20/09/2025 15:16

Well, I went to an average C of E state primary school quite a few years ago and this wouldn't have raised any eyebrows! We had a vaguely religious assembly in the morning, learned some Bible stories and occasionally the local vicar came to do the assembly.

Does this not happen any more?

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 20/09/2025 15:16

Why do you have that worry? The UK and USA couldn’t be more different in terms of attitude to Christianity and demographics of church goers.

How about adultery?
Coveting your neighbour's ass?

EveryDayisFriday · 20/09/2025 15:18

Religion is personal and should only be involved with the person following that path and their place of worship.
Not in schools or politics.

Corinthiana · 20/09/2025 15:21

Seriously, @CurlewKate , I don't think there's any need to worry. The practice of Christianity is very different in the USA, compared to here.
They have far more of a history of Puritanism and Fundamentalism than we do.

Edited

It's already starting - there have been Christian nationalist overtones at some of the recent marches in the UK.

I wouldn't support the 10 commandments in a school unless it's a church school.

merryhouse · 20/09/2025 15:30

Yeah, it's totally different in the US vs the UK.

One of the countries has official separation of church and state, the other has an established church...

No, I don't think the Ten Commandments on school walls would be helpful. (Quite apart from working out exactly how the first two are demarcated...)

The reason it's the Commandments rather than the Beatitudes is because this type of religion is all about the rules. The Beatitudes is more general warm-fuzzy guidelines for being happy and fortunate.
