I think this has been discussed but what is going on with the price of mince meat it's just so expensive. I know its versatile and you can make it cheaper with veg etc but it was cheaper yesterday for me to get stewing steak do a stew. Always used to be the cheapest thing. Know all foods have gone up but what have you noticed gone up dramatically.

I used to mostly eat offal and oxtail, mutton and goat meat, because they were so cheap (and delicious) but these are now more expensive than anything else! Although to be fair that's not "new" news, I blame the hipsters.

Cocoa powder is an arm and a leg now.

treacledan71 · 20/09/2025 11:34

I get minced steak from the butchers now, the vacuum pack packaging has really put me off. It’s £7 / 500g from the butchers and wrapped in paper. We all prefer it.

Another reason to emigrate to the Emerald Isle !

Everything is more expensive, including things like power and cattle feed, so that’ll push up the price of raising cows for meat. Then running shops is more expensive, minimum wages going up, employer NI going up, power into shops going up etc. All of which in turn makes the product more expensive to buy.

I have an ick about minced beef, for years I always ended up with lots of gristle so I switched to the organic 5% fat one and now it's nearly £10 for 500g! So I've reduced how much we buy of that and have been using turkey mince for a while, you really can't tell much difference in things like chilli or tacos, it's leaner and much higher protein as well, bulking it out with beans and lentils also helps.

RaymondPeterfellow · 20/09/2025 13:26

I’ve been using 5% pork mince from Sainsbury’s which is £2.59. I think it’s lovely in Ragu style pasta dishes or would be fine in Tacos etc

RaymondPeterfellow · 20/09/2025 13:26

Or similarly bulking out with lentils or whatever veg you have in the fridge!

Frugalgal · 20/09/2025 14:14

Not mince obviously but last weekend I fancied a roast beef Sunday dinner, the cheapest piece of bog standard beef joint I could find was £22 and when cooked it was horrible, loads of gristle through it I barely got enough for a tiny portion each for 4.

Not so long ago £22 would have bought a good sized good quality joint.

Thanks for all your posts. Seems like we all feel the same. Let's hope things get better

I buy 250g and bulk up with lentils.

That’s gone up to £3 this week, £12 per kg

Shame for farmers too if costs going up.

I make bolognese or chilli with half Linda McCartney soya mince and half good quality beef or pork mince- my H actually prefers it , says it has the flavour but less stodgy - the soya mince also makes great Dan Dan noodles too and last week was on offer at around£2 a bag in Waitrose!

CoastalCalm · 20/09/2025 15:40

Cattle are fetching twice their usual price at market due to reduced supply - a lot of farmers are switching due to increased costs. We use a lot of pork mince and pork fillet - once it’s been in a sauce or gravy then really it’s not that different from beef mince

Goosyloosy · 20/09/2025 15:48

Pork loin joints are only £5 kilo in Morrisons this week. I’m not keen on roasting pork as I never seem to get it right. But I bought a kilo joint and cut it up into pork loin steaks and froze some. Really tasty and you can cut to whatever thickness you fancy. I like a couple of thin ones cooked quickly rather than a thick one 😋

Is it?? I didn’t have it in my basket this week so didn’t notice. That’s a big jump!

I have tried quorn but just don't like it. Some good tips on here.

We buy 5% fat minced beef and have noticed a big increase in cost, this week we bought minced beef and also minced pork and I'm going to mix the 2 when making chilli in the slow cooker (I'll have double amounts of mince so will just double up everything else and freeze leftovers for a quick meal)

Kitchen1234567 · 21/09/2025 09:41

We bought some direct from local farmer yesterday - 32 for 5kg of guernsey beef (we’re in guernsey) which I thought was stonking good value. But I agree - price has gone through roof

twistyizzy · 21/09/2025 10:22

Because the cost of producing that meat has gone up eg food etc.

It's going to go to again after the dreadful summer we've had. Farmers have had to feed hay and hard feed over summer as zero grass. That costs money.

It's really not hard to understand.

Plumedenom · 22/09/2025 09:33

For those of you making ragu, in Italy many people do actually use half beef mince and half pork mince as it adds a lot of flavour. So you can save a bit of money and actually improve your ragu sauce.
