was just wondering if anyone has had their gallbladder taken out? how long did it take for you personally to recover? what was the pain like afterwards?

my mum is about to have it done soon and i was wondering if i should offer to stay with her for a few days and also look after her cat for a bit, she lives alone so just trying to prepare.

thanks.

Had mine out years ago by the big cut route; hopefully your Mum's will be keyhole. I did need help for quite a few weeks, as I had a big scar in a difficult place that takes the strain when you lift things.

If she has keyhole she will likely bounce back quicker. But I would expect to be with her for a week if you are able.

I had mine out over 10 years ago, I was mid 30’s. Keyhole but had a slightly bigger cut in one area due to it being inflamed. Recovered within 2/3 weeks but the first few days I was in agony and couldn’t shower properly or bend. I’m sure your mum will appreciate the help.

Yes, about 15 years ago by keyhole surgery. One of the best things I ever did!

I felt like I'd been hit by a bus for a couple of days and then recovered quickly. After a couple of weeks I was back to normal but without the fear of the horrific pain.

I had a baby to look after, so getting up and down from the floor was hard for about a week, as was picking baby up. I'm assuming your Mum won't have to do that, so as long as she can rest, I'm sure she'll be fine. I would have loved someone to prepare food for me and push the hoover round every so often, so if you can help out with things like that in sure she'd appreciate it!
Hope it goes well!

Gosh - husband has his removed keyhole and was fine after 48 hours. Strange he didn’t make more of a meal of it Hmm

Allmarbleslost · 19/09/2025 21:40

She will need support for a few days, particularly with the cat (she won't be able to bend to put food on the floor/change litter tray etc)

Rocknrollstar · 19/09/2025 22:02

Had mine out by keyhole - over 70 years of age. Was out of hospital the same day and experienced no pain. Don’t even remember needing to recover - just took it easy for a few days.

AuntieDolly · 19/09/2025 22:13

I’d say it was 2 weeks before I felt fully recovered after keyhole. The worst bit was being blown up like a balloon- I could barely bend or breathe

Mikart · 19/09/2025 22:15

I was ok a couple of days after. I'm in my 60s. Shuffled out for coffee after 3 days and kept active

SeptConkers · 19/09/2025 22:17

I think it really varies I ended up having four weeks off work as one of the port key holes was under my bra band strap and got infected. Plus I had two very young children so rest was tricky I was exhausted going into surgery and did not bounce back as quickly as I’d hoped. I was 40 then.

Lovelynames123 · 19/09/2025 22:29

The first couple of days I couldn't sit up without help so need bf at the time to help me out of bed, to the loo etc. I was back to work after 2 weeks without pain

ltscoldonthesidelines · 19/09/2025 22:33

Husband had his out, specialist team in London (we don’t live on London) carried out the procedure. due to the likelyhood of there being severe complications. He was able to watch our child play football the next day. Hope your mum has suck a swift recovery

Vaxtable · 19/09/2025 22:43

Yes about 7 years ago, keyhole. They gave me some strong painkillers to take if necessary. I took them for a couple of nights only but then nothing

stayed with family the first night then went home where I live on my own and was fine

RandyBentwick · 19/09/2025 22:59

Had mine taken out by keyhole 3 years ago. Was signed off work for 2 weeks but was fine after 3 days.

HolidayHappy123 · 19/09/2025 23:01

No big deal. I barely felt any pain and didn’t even have stitches, just steri strips.

1stTimeMummy2021 · 20/09/2025 08:46

I had mine out 3 months ago and am still not right but only needed help for a couple of weeks. I did have an infection and have not correctly healed so may need a second operation so everyone's experience is quite different. Everyone said how much better I'd feel once it was out and they were right in some respects but OMG the pain from the infection and getting doctors to listen to me that something was wrong was the worst. I'd rather have another c-section than repeat this op.

Bladderpool · 20/09/2025 08:51

Got mine out about 5 weeks ago, was feeling great after about 2 days but a few weeks later I started getting terrible attacks again, turns out there were 2 gallstones on the loose. I then developed jaundice. The rogue stones are out now, it’s been a horrible experience.

Anonymous23456 · 20/09/2025 08:54

I think it's different for everyone. My dad had his removed. He got peritonitis and spent several weeks in the hospital. Once he was released from the hospital he needed minding for 4 weeks. Hopefully, your mum's is more straightforward.

dudsville · 20/09/2025 08:55

There are a lot of factors at play here, age, fitness, type of removal, etc. I was about 50 and reasonably healthy with keyhole removal. I was mostly in bed for a couple of days. My DH brought me food, and that was nice, but I would've been ok to fend for myself. So if you're mum is like me, it would be really nice fit her to have you around, but 24/7 support isn't necessary.

Loobieloo27 · 20/09/2025 09:07

I had my gallbladder out 2 weeks ago, for 2 days I needed help getting up from laying in bed as bending was difficult but after that I was OK to potter around slowly. 2 weeks later I'd day I'm back to normal.

Hope she has a swift recovery.
