Alternatives to Sky TV and internet

Hi - I’m just seeking the expertise of the hive mind - my DH is looking into alternatives to Sky, I’m clueless though! He said his friend uses a Firestick and you can get all the channels, everything normally found on Sky?! Is that correct?
also a general what is it like? Is it good? Do you need a fire stick for all televisions in the house? Can you watch different programmes on different televisions at the same time?

secondly, does anyone have any other alternatives which are cheap and good?
TIA

When I finally got rid of Virgin Media about 2 years ago I decided just to buy a Firestick.
I've found it really good actually. But I pay for a subscription to Now TV purely because it gave me access to tennis coverage, although my son enjoys watching other sports on it when he visits.
So thats the thing with the Firestick: a lot of the apps require paid subscription. I don't bother because I'm happy enough with the free stuff, apart from the sport.
I'm glad I don't have to deal with Virgin anymore and I'm paying out a lot less monthly than I would be with them.

I've only got one tv but I think if you have multiple TVs you can either buy a firestick for each of them. Or buy a specific device which enables the content to be shown on all the TVs and it would be the same thing shown on each.

h has a fire stick for football. They are cracking down on them. You need one in each tv you are watching.

Freeview. All the main channels but no on demand/catch up such as iplayer unless you have separate Internet. You do need a decent aerial though.

Edit - can I ask why you are dropping Sky? I was looking at their basic tv/Internet package 😬

Given how soon you can get goal highlights nowadays, is one option to do without for a while? If your favourite club is on only a few times a season, perhaps visit a local pub?

PuppyMonkey · 19/09/2025 17:13

Your DH mate sounds like he’s got one of the dodgy firesticks if he’s watching everything he normally would on Sky without paying.Grin

You can get legit fire sticks but you’re supposed to pay the subscription. Eg Now TV has all the Sky programmes in the entertainment package or all the films in the cinema package and the sport in the sports package. You can also get Netflix, Apple TV or whatever subscription you decide on.

Whichever ones you subscribe to, it will probably be nowhere near as expensive as Sky TV, I can guarantee that.

I recently got rid of sky and moved to now tv, it’s saving me a fortune, but I do miss the ability to record programs. I have to remember everything I might want to watch

I've got a firestick and subscribe to Netflix and Amazon Prime, and it's way cheaper than what I used to pay for Sky. It also has all the catch up apps on it, such as iPlayer and ITVx.

You need one for each TV you have, unless you have smart TV, which has all the apps on it anyway.

We got rid of Sky tv and just plugged the satellite into the back of the tv, getting the freeview/freesat channels. We use the catch up services (iplayer etc) a lot and pay for netflix, appletv and we had prime already. In all, it's less than half the price of our previous tv package. We kept Sky Internet because it's very stable and there's limited choice for other providers.

We have now tv. Much cheaper than Sky, and can cancel any time.

Following. I watch what I want on my iPad but it would be good to watch on a larger screen.

I have no interest in Sky or any kind of sports or Disney or other children's programming.

Just want to view my programmes on a bigger screen so maybe freeview also? How would I do that? My tv screen is old, needless to say!

chunkybear · 19/09/2025 19:16

@LittleGreenDragons - he says it’s cheaper, it probably is but I think once we do the add ons and have to buy a stick for the second telly it’ll be racking up cost wise
