I bought some chicken legs and thought they would make a couple of nice meals this week. I pressure cooked the legs with carrots and onions and separated the meat from skin and bones once done. I set the meat aside, covered the dish and then decided to make soup with the broth so added more vegetable and pressure cooked that.
Once done I went to put some of the meat into the shop, took off the cover and a horrible green fly crawled out .
I'm not that squeamish but really did feel sick seeing it. Thankfully the soup is fine but the thought of all the nice meat going to waste is sickening. I don't even have animals I could give it to.

Ahh that’s so annoying. I couldn’t eat it either though.

Everyonelikecapybaras · 18/09/2025 16:58

I will openly admit that I would still eat it...

Bladderpool · 18/09/2025 16:58

Flies are the worst, they give me the heave.

If it's only been sat for an hour or two I'd just hear it up properly and eat it....

If you want to throw it out, chuck it in a hedgerow or similar and the beasties (of whatever variety) will eat it. Hedgehogs come and get it here.

Qashgal · 18/09/2025 17:04

I was actually proud of myself for putting the cover on . I had only had a few nibbles as I separated the meat as I was conscious that I would be doing future me out of a nice curry or sandwich tomorrow. Fucking fly. I feel quite murderous.

Luckily the soup is lovely and I have the last of a homemade loaf left to eat with it so all is not quite lost.

Oh that's a good idea. We do have quite a lot of little beasts meandering through the garden so I'll leave them a lovely supper.

A greenfly as in an aphid? If so, eat it.
A green fly on the other hand then feed the little beasts.

Yes a horrible metallic green fly . I honestly thought it was a cockroach as it crawled out from under a chunk of meat. I had such a visceral reaction .

If it had simply landed on a piece and flown off again I might have made my peace with it but it was trapped under the cover for about 30 minutes. That's too much for me. But hopefully the hedgehogs and foxes will benefit.

Why wouldn't you still eat it? You'd be heating it up again. I don't understand what you think will happen or why it's obvious that the food needs to be chucked in a hedge.

QuinoafromKew · 18/09/2025 17:19

Yes I am pretty robust and eat the things i grow directly from the bush but a horrible metallic green fly and I would also chuck it.
Bad luck OP.

beadystar · 18/09/2025 17:27

I’m pretty hardy but would still chuck meat that a big fly had been crawling over under cover for a half hour. I couldn’t get over the idea of its eggs either. Sorry OP.

Because it’s similar to a bluebottle. If it was in there for 30 minutes it’s probably laid eggs. It would be suicidal to eat it.

If you really want to eat maggot ridden meat, that’s entirely up to you, most of us don’t. And for someone with sensitive digestive systems, yes, suicidal isn’t far off.

Theseventhmagpie · 18/09/2025 17:57

I wouldn’t dream of eating it, please leave it out for the local wildlife.

Yes for me it potentially would be suicidal as I do have IBS and diverticulosis.

Although my visceral reaction didn't take that into account at all and I literally couldn't stomach the thought of eating it along with whatever diseases those green flies ( green bottles ?) bring ,never mind the thought of them laying eggs.

I was also proud of myself for remembering that I had the chicken in the fridge and was using it well before the use by date. And I had the other ingredients necessary for making the soup base. All ruined by a tiny buzzy annoyance.

At least it won't be put in the bin to rot so there's that.

It's already under the bushes at the end of the garden.

@Qashgal hopefully Mr Fox will find it later

CanIbeRio · 18/09/2025 18:03

If it makes you feel better exactly the same thing happened to me back in the summer with some lovely left over roast beef. I'd wrapped it in foil but it was too warm still to put in the fridge so I loosened the foil to let it cool quicker. Half hr later the foil was vibrating 😮 opened it up and a blue bottle flew out 😱. DH didn't give 2 hoots and had it for tea the following day (I did reheat well). I passed!! He's still alive!

CanIbeRio · 18/09/2025 18:04

Ah! I see you've decided to pass!!!

I know its not about this but do you have an Instapot? I have had one for a year and I am too scared to use it!

Sunshineandrainbow · 18/09/2025 23:29

Lucky fox. I have them some chops last night ❤️

AlwaysTheRenegade · 18/09/2025 23:30

I agree with OP. I remember a great uncle of mine used to call them "shit flys" . They're massive and lay eggs on everything 😷

Yes i do have an instapot! Dont be scared ,just read the booklet and have a go at naking something simple like vegetable soup. Its a great tool for trying out ideas. Im not a great cook but every so often i fancy making something tasty and the instapot does it nice and quickly.
