Where is good to live in the UK?

Does anyone else feel totally terrified at the current state of the UK? The march last weekend made me so sad and seems so many people are just consumed by hate at the moment.

Is there anywhere left in the UK that is a good place to be? With a community spirit? It seems to be dying out fast.

Weymouth area and Peak District

A rural village in Scotland? I’m from N.Ireland, a nice village, and we had a lovely community when I was growing up. Now I live in Manchester, which I loved for its multicultural aspects, but suddenly there are flags badly drawn on roundabouts. I’m glad we’ve got Irish passports. I feel really sorry for the British people who are trapped in this hate fest.

Small rural community in Wales here. Still feels like it has community spirit. A mix of folk from all over live here too.

Do you mind me asking where in Northern Ireland?

Perth. Very diverse.

I am a brown person who lives 20 minutes from the march and I am not terrified!
I find great community spirit in London.

Look, it's alarming and awful. Not saying it isn't. That said, sometimes the news algorithm shows us only terrible stuff. I was away in a very small and white village last week on a solo trip. Possibly the only brown person Everybody was incredibly kind and nice to me. I can't believe that the general public are Tommy lovers.

It’s just another March

no need to be so dramatic

Not terrified, just very sad. I think the divisiveness is really detrimental to everyone.

Such a shame that the country has declined to this position.

I very much hope so. Brexshit was so damaging.

It’s a sea change toward the right, mirroring the USA. Anyone legal will be fine.

Yes, the terror is quite familiar! But...

I don't have any specific suggestions. But I did find when I volunteered for something in my local area (intercity, ethnically diverse, bad reputation) I started to get coopted into lots of other stuff. Basically I think most places probably have a "good community" or the potential for a good community you just have to find it... That's not to downplay the issues. But I really liked living there even though it's in the news sometimes for bad reasons. But one of my friends who moved to a small posh village in Cheshire also found herself bothered with offers by the vicar and others etc to take part in bell ringing, maybe join the cricket etc etc. Basically they were permanently short of people for all the traditional village stuff. And that's probably true of lots of places even if they seem quite different.

I think one of the worst things about social media algorithms is they portray everything as doomed/permanently awful. So on one end dangerous city streets with feral children and dangerous crime gangs (often with a racist subtext) On the other hand the idea that everyone is hateful. But most places in the UK, most people are fine. I think social media emphasises the divisiveness. But also community's only made up of individuals so it's sort of heavily dependent on what everyone makes it. It's the same as if you want an area with a nice high street, use the local high street as much as possible. If you want a nice community, don't get put off interacting by the constant slew of toxicity from social media/the news/certain politicians basically. As I think the only way "out" is for the people that do want things to improve (most people) to make that happen at a grass roots level.

South Wales seems a great place to live. Live near the coast and work in the Merthyr area. No real issues. My school has many different nationalities, from Sudan, Nigeria, India, Philippines and Eastern Europe, plus Portugal. No issues with this at all.

No, it's really not.

so you're happy with such a display of racism?

Are you near the coast? I want to move to Wales, and I’m currently looking for somewhere near the sea.
