Travel in Newcastle city centre

Going to Newcastle for a few days soon. We're staying near the main train station, I believe it's about a 20 mins walk into town and we're on the number 1 bus route

Can you pay for the bus by tapping your debit card or is it cash only? Same question for the metro system. Thanks!

Yes you can use debit or credit card on Go North East buses (and likely Stage Coach). Good app for Go North East where you can track the buses. Likely the same for the Metro with cashless although I never use it.

CatamaranViper · 17/09/2025 21:03

If you're staying at central station, you are in the city centre. You can walk down to the quayside in about 10 mins or up to Haymarket in 20.
I don't think I've used cash in a few years now on public transport so I wouldn't worry....the driver would probably be more perplexed if you did!

What are you doing in the sunny toon?

Sunshineclouds11 · 17/09/2025 21:03

Can use cards on both bus and metro

Lottapianos · 17/09/2025 21:07

'What are you doing in the sunny toon?'

Eating, drinking, taking in the cultural highlights 😁 never been before. Will probably visit Hexham and Hadrian's Walk one day too

That's brilliant, thanks everyone!

If you are near the station you are pretty much right near most local bus routes and can walk to the main bus stations in 10 minutes for all other buses.

GeordiePonyPrincess · 17/09/2025 21:15

The toon tour bus goes from central station too.

The toon tour bus goes from central station too.

But only at weekends st this time of year (says person who was there from Monday - Thursday last week, slightly bitterly.)

I enjoyed Laing Art Gallery, Woodhorn Colliery (out of town) and Whitley Bay/Cullercoats/Tynemouth (i suspect that might be slightly weather dependent though.) Segedunum is interesting, but I actually found the history of the ship yard and coal mines more interesting than the Roman bit - I did most of the other Hadrian Wall sites earlier in the year, though. It's a good viewing tower, though. If you do Beamish, you definitely need a whole day. Jarrow Hall is a bit disappointing at the moment, I thought.

I realise you weren't asking about any of that. 😀

Newcastle City Centre is compact so Central Station on one edge of it and the Universities at the other. Takes about 20 mins to walk from one side to another so everything is within walking for that. It will likely be quicker for you to walk around the city centre. Grey St is a lovely walk on the way to the Quayside especially if it's dry weather! I think the Quaylink 1 bus runs from the Central Station if you don't fancy the walk back up the hill!

For Hexham it's the train, for the coast it's the Metro. Grants Bakery in Corbridge is on the train line for admittedly expensive, but amazing savouries and cakes.

Newcastle NE1 have just started a lunch club deal on Tuesdays NE1's Lunch Club | Get into Newcastle https://share.google/7E0dG1tfKiJuiQoH0

That's all from me and have a great time!

I'd recommend a day trip to Alnwick it's rather beautiful

Ridingaroundonbuses · 18/09/2025 08:17

If you are planning on using the buses and metros for multiple journeys then you are better off asking on the bus or selecting at a metro station a TNE day saver for £7.50 which would allow you travel on all the bus companies and the metro. You’d only need to make three journeys to get your money back.

Ridingaroundonbuses · 18/09/2025 08:23

You can get several buses to Hexham. I recommend getting the Stagecoach ones that take you through little villages and on one ( or maybe the other too) you get to see part of Hadrians Wall. Both buses I believe stop in Corbridge. A good shop to visit there is RE: found objects where you can get French soap, market bags and other lovely stuff for the kitchen etc. There’s also a free bus on a Saturday that stops at Belsay and Wallington Hall ( English Heritage and National Trust) if you fancy that but they only go there an come back at certain times.

Lottapianos · 18/09/2025 09:34

Thank you all so much for all the advice! Really looking forward to it - we're only there for 4 days, will possibly be making a return ☺️

Easy train access to Durham and even upto Edinburgh if you want, good bus services but if you are simply visiting the city, a lot of it is walkable from where you will be

Stillwaternever · 18/09/2025 09:45

Fabulous city and no need to visit out of it.

We love Ouseburn, the Quayside and Jesmond.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 18/09/2025 09:46

As has already been said you are in the centre, and if you can walk, walking the town reveals some hidden gems. Remember a rain mac!

Lottapianos · 18/09/2025 10:02

Can anyone recommend a good restaurant in Chinatown? Looking for great food, nothing fancy. A pub that does good beer nearby would be great too!

CatamaranViper · 18/09/2025 11:34

I like The Forth and the Town Wall (pubs) which are on Pink Lane, near the train station. You could also head to Wylam Brewery which is a bit further out but still walkable

CatamaranViper · 18/09/2025 11:37

I haven't been to china town in ages, last time I went King Laus was still there but I believe that's gone now so can't weigh in on that! But Zaap Thai street food is amazing

Sunshineclouds11 · 18/09/2025 18:42

Little Asia in China town is lovely

apapuchi · 18/09/2025 20:21

I'm from Newcastle (lived abroad all over and now back) and if you're near Central Station you're in Newcastle 'proper' and can walk everywhere you want to go within the city centre itself.

Chilli Padi is an AMAZING restaurant - Malaysian and Pan-Asian - it's just perfect. Happiness and Infusion 2018 are brilliant, too. You could join the group on Facebook called Newcastle Foodies if you're on FB, people will give you brilliant recommendations for everything including non-foodie stuff.

If you want pub-pubs then The Forth, Town Wall, Tilleys (all three a stone's throw from Central Station), The Old George between Central and Monument (walking about five mins from Central), The Crown Posada is an fantastic old traditional pub walking down from Central to the Quayside. Keep walking along the Quayside towards and beyond the Millennium Bridge to the Ouseburn where there are great pubs like The Tyne Bar, Ship Inn, Cumberland Arms and The Free Trade which has a lovely view up-river of the bridges from their beer garden. If you like fancy bars or cocktails you'll also be spoilt for choice. Loads of fab restaurants and bars.

In the very centre near Grey's Monument there's the old indoor market The Grainger Market with little foodie stalls like lush Chinese dumplings, gyros, a Spanish tapas type place, Indian street food, bagels, Cuban food etc. Well worth a wander and some fairly cheap bites to eat on the go. Definitely recommend it!

I hope you love Newcastle, I really do. It's such a great, walkable and easy to visit city compared to others where everything is quite spaced apart. If you struggle I'm sure you'll find friendly Geordies more than happy to help you, for the most part anyway :)

pinkbackground · 18/09/2025 20:35

Nothing to do with what you asked but Aneeshas buffet restaurant just off the Quayside is superb.

anon2022anon · 18/09/2025 20:40

For more casual food, I really recommend Hen & Hops- the chicken was delicious, and I've never tried poutine before, it was beaut!

stretchworkwrigglerepeat · 18/09/2025 20:42

Take a walk up to Newcastle uni campus. The quad through the arches is beautiful. From there, walk up to exhibition park and through to Wylam Brewery for nice food and beers. I also recommend Ernest for brunch. You can walk from there down to quayside. Baltic for the views. Make sure you go to Grainger market. Great food stalls in there these days.
