Hi, I'm not going to make people guess - my DD is 9 and this was produced in school at the end of year 4. This is her 'best writing' with a lot of effort - at home it is nowhere near this neat nor small.

She is bright and loves reading; she learnt to read quickly and her reading ability is about two years above her age, but she has a very photographic memory for words - when she reads out loud to me, if it's a word she hasn't seen before, she rushes and even if it's a word that can be broken down phonetically, will say something that has some, but little relationship to how the word is pronounced. She will also sometimes miss words out.

Would this writing be of concern to you? She really dislikes writing - she doesn't have a traditional tripod grip and often complains of hand pain.

I am also concerned about the type of spelling and grammar mistakes she is making, eg 'mut' for 'much', 'fapped' for 'flapped, 'they' for 'their', spelt butterfly incorrectly, but differently twice, the ending of which has no relation to how the word sounds, missed the 'ed' from 'wanted' but also spelt 'want' 'wont', missed the second 'a' from 'amazing'. Also not sure what 'wnek' should be.

I have raised this both with last year's teacher and also SENCO (DD is autistic and experiences EBSA, and I believe her struggles with writing/effort she is needing to put in are definitely contributing). They are however not overly concerned and her writing has been assessed as meeting expectations.

Any teachers or those with experience - would you consider this to be normal?

What also concerns me is that her brother is two years younger and although he has been slower to pick up reading, his writing is already neater and is better at spelling (and the spelling mistakes he makes make more sense, for example, using one 'l' instead of two).

I haven't got any advice but my DC's (8yrs) writing is similar, although their writing isn't as neat and they write some letters backwards. They are also behind with their reading so not the same as your DD in that respect.

I know you will be worried. A family member had the same difficulty. They are on the spectrum, and now they are older, they have someone to transcribe for him.

What stood out to me was the beautiful sentiment she was expressing.
