1000 piece jigsaw puzzle with 3 pieces missing. Bin or charity shop?

Option 1: Bin it

Option 2: write on the box: "3 pieces missing" (with little crosses to show where in the picture) and donate back to the charity shop I bought it from so they can sell it again for another couple of pounds.

I suppose I ought to bin it, but on the other hand I've just had a perfectly nice time putting it together and I'm not miffed that it wasn't complete. That's just a risk when you buy second hand jigsaw puzzles. And if I write on it, people will know the deal.

i guess if you write on it 3 pieces missing the charity shop might get a buyer and make some money.

Bin!

Bin it

Option 2.

Thmssngvwlsrnd · 17/09/2025 06:52

I've e got the same dilemma - bought a lovely 1000 piece jigsaw from Vinted, turned out to have 1 piece missing. But I did enjoy doing it. I think I'm going to give it to charity and write 'one piece missing'. As long as people know, I think it's OK.

Option 2.

I work in a Charity shop.

We will take jigsaws with pieces missing if they are marked on the box. We live near to the coast so we get a lot of visitors who only want something to do in their 'digs' when it rains.

They probably end up in the bin anyway but at least we get some money out of it !

Viot · 17/09/2025 06:52

The people saying to bin it - are you regular jigsaw puzzlers?

I got a puzzle from a charity shop which ended up having a piece missing (and some random piece that had nothing to do with the puzzle). When I finished it and went to return it to charity shop to sell again they didn’t want it with piece missing.

Sblank · 17/09/2025 06:54

I probably do one jigsaw a week from a charity shop and would say there's a missing piece about 50 per cent of the time.

123ZYX · 17/09/2025 06:55

Could you contact the manufacturer and see if they are able to send spares (if you know which pieces they are)?

Wolfpa · 17/09/2025 06:55

Some companies will send replacement pieces, if it is not from a company that would replace I would just get rid of the jigsaw. It is a broken item if it can’t be fixed why would you pass it onto someone else.

Really? I must be lucky. I also do a lot of charity shop puzzles and they are usually complete. Very rare to have missing pieces.

Pass it on to a friend or relative? I don't think I would personally buy a jigsaw with a piece missing.

XelaM · 17/09/2025 07:10

I love jigsaws but doing one with pieces missing is pure torture. Bin it!

unicornsarereal72 · 17/09/2025 07:14

I put mine on free sites on Facebook explaining there are a few pieces missing but doesn’t affect the puzzle. They have always been taken

musicalfrog · 17/09/2025 07:14

I don't mind missing pieces personally I still enjoy doing them. Adds to the challenge if anything! Charity shops aren't always cheap but they might give a discount on a missing piece puzzle. I would do option 2, at least if there is a note then you know to expect it.

ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird · 17/09/2025 07:19

I do puzzles sometimes and I think that provided I knew in advance there were missing pieces I would be happy with it.

Levriers · 17/09/2025 07:22

Bin it. Don’t send it to charity FGS

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 17/09/2025 07:25

Charity shop. Or... Could you creatively cut out and colour in the missing pieces on card? That would be fun (to me) then pass to charity shop? Or would that be a faux pas of the worse type?

SushiForMe · 17/09/2025 07:25

If tou take it back to the charity shop at least write very clearly on the box that a piece is missing, not an attached note that could fall off. Personally I would bin it, so disappointing when buying second hand and realising pieces are missing.

whitewineandsun · 17/09/2025 07:26

Why would you do a jigsaw if you knew pieces were missing? Genuinely curious about that.

Paaseitjes · 17/09/2025 07:27

Bin. The charity shop has to pay for rubbish disposal so you're costing them money by offloading your crap.

3 pieces out of 1000 is a small percentage

Because the fun is in the process not the finished product.

As soon as it's done I take it apart to start the next one so who cares if it's not perfect?

It's my mindful activity and I love it. Seems very wasteful to chuck it when some would still get enjoyment from it. Puzzles can be expensive new, and tbh unless it's been checked before hand, charity shop puzzles are always going to be a risk.
