Is this normal for teenagers? Has it always been like this and what’s going on?

On social media, why do kids get so defensive about their age and want to be seen as “older”?

By this I mean that there is a trend on social media for older teenagers and young adults to be nostalgic about their childhood and reminisce about the early 2000s. And then kids born in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 etc will get offended and say “why are you excluding us”; “why are you treating us like babies”?

I just don’t understand why they want to be so included. Also, they deliberately dress like they are older and copy trends and fashions set by older teens and get offended when someone tells them to act their age.

Also, please explain why kids that are like 14, 15, 16, 17 etc are getting so bold? I’m not sure if this is a recent thing or if it’s always been this way; but such kids are quick to brand people born in like 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 etc as “old fashioned” and “outdated” and act as though they are now the dominant youth culture when they are still so young and up until last year, nobody had been hearing from them. It’s like they are trying to act as though people in their early 20s and late teens are not the dominant youth culture. So, what’s going on?

It has always been that way. I’m guessing you are early 20s?

BankTeller · 17/09/2025 05:57

I’m really envious of anyone born in 2010.

it was by far imo the best year for

music, fashion, some great TV - I’m SO nostalgic for this year it’s driving me to the point where I’m streaming Rihanna’s ‘Te Amo’ in the hope I can somehow ‘manifest’ 2010.

sorry I know this isn’t the point of the thread

The younger ones ARE the dominant youth culture from their perspective though, as they're in it.

Kids have always wanted to act older. I surprised you're surprised!

Rose213 · 17/09/2025 06:27

Strange thing for an adult to get so worked up about to be honest.

Pricelessadvice · 17/09/2025 06:29

Anyone born in the 2000’s is still a baby as far as I’m concerned!

NerrSnerr · 17/09/2025 06:32

How old are you OP? Everyone thinks they’re from the best generation, teenagers think they’re it, and they think everyone elder than them irrelevant and past it. That’s just how it works.

Dabralor · 17/09/2025 06:33

kids are gonna kid. This has always happened- it’s part of growing up.

just wait until you start listening to radio 2. Age comes to us all.

I was listening to Radio 2 by the age of 23

There really was no hope for me was there?

WasherWoman25 · 17/09/2025 06:40

This has always been a thing! We just didn’t have social media to share it on.

I’ve got some pictures of me at 15 and everytime we get them out, my DH jokes that I look older on those then we met / married in my early 20’s.

Why are you envious of people who were babies in what you think was the best year? They wouldn’t have known what was happening in music fashion etc. isn’t it best to be at least say 12 in whatever’s the best year so you can experience it?!

frozendaisy · 17/09/2025 06:52

We/ve got two teens and the last thing you need to do is understand them!

FatAgain · 17/09/2025 06:52

You’re all talking shite, 1989 was when the world peaked. 🎉🎉🎉

No thanks ..

if you’re looking for peaked it’s more 86

FatAgain · 17/09/2025 13:48

Nono, you’re forgetting the walls came down everywhere and ravers got
going… here’s a wee acid house face to jog your memory !! 🙂

Meadowfinch · 17/09/2025 13:51

It's always been that way.

Every child wants more freedom, to be allowed to do more things like their older siblings. Veto something and it instantly becomes more desirable.

But that doesn't make sense. If it was so good a year why are you jealous of someone who would have been so young (between a few days and 12 months old) who wouldn't have appreciated/won't remember any of it?

Teenagers Are 'youth culture', it was ever thus!

Goldenbear · 17/09/2025 14:25

In my teenage years - mid 90s, we didn't look to 20+ for fashion ideas unless in a magazine or musician but it wasn't like you referred for example to Joanna, your neighbour's 21 year old daughter, who worked as a legal secretary in the City for fashion inspiration.

I know I know 🤣 - it’s just I personally would feel so proud if I could put 2010 as my year of birth 😊🙌

My friend’s cat was born in 2010 so I’ve even told her I’m envious of him Grin

19 and putting off going to university. These inane threads make a nice change TBF.

& they never reply

BoredZelda · 17/09/2025 21:43

Teenagers have always been bold. And so they should be. They are in the phase of their life where idealism meets maturity and is matched with energy and determination to make a better world. They haven’t yet (generally) had their wings clipped by real life, they don’t know the monotony of adulthood, the relentlessness of having to work to pay bills, the looming responsibilities that will last the rest of their lives.

Let them be bold, let them have a fire in their bellies for whatever it is they are passionate about, let them decide the world can be a better place and push boundaries and societal norms to make it happen. Some of it might make a difference, some of it won’t, but no situation is made worse by having young people try to make things better.

And yes, we were always in a hurry to grow up. God knows why!

Dearover · 17/09/2025 22:56

I suppose it's no different to children not wanting to be left out when they see grown ups posting on MN

ForCoralScroller · 15/01/2026 20:26

What?

blackheartsgirl · 15/01/2026 22:30

Nope 1991 was the year. I turned 14 halfway through and I think it was the best year of my life.

trance classics
cheesy films like Robin Hood
Bryan Adam’s being no 1 for a million years 😆
summer seemed hot, out with my friends, end of year school trip camping

we thought we were the dogs bollocks as teenagers and looked down on our boring old parents much the same as my youngest two act superior to me when it comes to youth culture! One of mine was born in 2010. I always think she was born in the wrong era as she is always listening to 70s, 80’s and 90’s music.
