Any hikers around...

My daughter, who will be 17 next year has really got into hiking in the last few years (inspired by DOE I think). She wants to go hiking somwhere abroad for a few days next year, really likes the sound of Italy (mountains preferably) but I am a bit concerned that this might be a bit much but very happy to be corrected. She's done plenty of hiking around the UK so whilst not a novice, she's not super experienced. For context, her and friends are sensible and not really into drinking or anything.

I love her hobby but just want to make sure she's safe. Any ideas would be great.

There are so many great ideas on here - thank you (and feeling quite inspired to hike myself now).

Austria and Switzerland are both well organised with loads of mountain trails well marked with signpost which have estimated times on the. Local tourist offices run cheap or free guided walks in some places. Zermatt in Switzerland or the Achensee in Austria would be good introductions of alpine walking. It's also worth her looking at the Alpine Clubs as these often have junior sections which offer the opportunity to meet up with other young walkers.

Also to add have a look at companies that offer self guided holidays for inspiration and a rough estimate for costs.

There is a big difference in day trips (centre based) one or 2 overnight stays and 4+ overnight stays. It's easy to overestimate abilities in terms of mileage and elevation profiles and don't forget altitude that will have an impact on performance.

Altitude broke me on on trip to south America, took me 3 years to get back to hiking mountains instead of following rivers
