EV charging point at home - advice needed please

I have ordered a hybrid car through work thinking (naively) that organising a charging point for home would be straight forward.

How wrong I was!

Can anyone explain to me in very simple terms what I need to think about, best value and if I can buy the charging station and get an independent electrician to fit it?

I have checked with my council and I am not eligible for any grants or green incentives.

You may need to get your supply equipment upgraded (your distribution network operator will do this for free, but it may involve digging up your garden to access your cable) if your supply equipment is old, before you can get a charger installed. You'll also need a smart meter (to get the cheap overnight tariffs).

We had to do this when we got our fully electric car. MASSIVE PITA. But when we had our hybrid we used the plug in the garage

We went though our energy company OVO - the quote was much the same as others at £1000 for 7.5m cable. We have an app that means OVO will charge our car when it is cheapest between set hours and is much much cheaper. Previously used a 3 pin plug which took around 6-8 hours for full charge and much more expensive, and the proper one now only takes about an hour.
had to do a survey for installation and UK power network had to sign something off and came to install something for free first.

What car have you ordered, and how big is the battery? Benefit of a dedicated home charger will be less with a hybrid than a full EV...

it’s a mercedes CLA 250e coupe 🙂 very excited as it’s my first ever ‘posh’ car. it’s 15.6 kw. so the electric range isn’t great but more than the vast majority of my journeys. i would only do more than the range about once a month, if that

Yup we charge ours on a normal plug. It’s slow but cheap and enough for us. We do 100km a day in a Zoe.
