Would you go to HR about this?

Posting for traffic, the work topic doesn’t seem to get much action!

I work in an online based role for a technology retailer. My shift finishes at 2 a.m. and I am required to work from the office twice a week and the rest of the time I work from home.

The day team has three shifts, the last of which finishes at 10 p.m. (the late shift) after which point there are only 4 of us left working the 2 a.m. finish. The department managers decided that it would not be great for the night team to work in a huge empty building til 2 a.m. by ourselves, so their brilliant solution was that we should start our shifts in the same building as the late shift team (which consists of maybe 5 or 6 people), then at around 9:30, we (the night team) have to log off, pack up all our stuff, leave the building and walk across a gigantic car park to a different building where a different department which also has a 2 a.m. team is based, and work the rest of our shift alongside them.

For various reasons I have requested a change to my start time on the nights I am in the office so I will be starting at 9 p.m. As part of this request I suggested that instead of going to work in the same building as the late team for all of 30-45 minutes, I head straight to the second office and work my whole shift there.

But no. The response was the loss of productivity is worth it for the half hour or 45 minutes I would spend sitting on the other side of a bank of monitors in virtual silence with a few people from the late team.

I just find this whole setup utterly absurd. There is usually at least 15-20 minutes per person of time lost in packing all our shit up, schlepping across the car park whatever the weather, setting everything up again, usually people will go to the loo, get a cup of tea etc. Not to mention the disruption of getting to the office, logging in, getting into the mindset and flow of working only to have to stop, pack everything up and start all over again less than an hour later. (Don’t get me started on the fact that the 2 a.m. team is made to come into the office in the first place when no part of our role requires our physical presence there…)

I don’t want to argue it with my manager but I really don’t want to continue with this absolute farce- but would it be something to approach HR about? And how should I frame it if so? Grateful for any advice and suggestions.

Could you approach your manager / HR with the idea that the entire 2am finish team move to the other building permanently? That way it’s not just you asking for an accommodation.

Frame it as improving the productivity of the team as it removes the disruption etc.

Also if you’re in a union talk to your rep as they will be able to assist with this.

Good luck

It does seem odd. I guess maybe they think they'll save money on energy and cleaning if they put you all together? But why not let you start in the other location at 9pm?

I'd speak to the others in the team and write a group email saying however many of you are not happy with the arrangement and it's a bad business decision to have so much down time. Send that to your manager and copy HR in if necessary.

They’ll certainly say no to the whole team moving. They think the facetime with the few people in the late team is more important than the loss of productivity/disruption. And for those in the night team starting at 6, 7 or even 8pm that might be true but when I’m arriving, setting up, logging in, logging off, packing up and leaving again all within 45 minutes I just don’t see the point.

I think so too, but the higher-ups don’t see it that way… 🤷🏼‍♀️

Erm….. very odd. That would completely throw me off and I would really struggle to get settled for the first part or second part. Very disruptive especially on days for 45mins. Absurd.
is there a safety protocol in place for leaving work at 2am. Do you all drive?
I used to finish a night shift at 3am and we would have a work WhatsApp that needs to report we were home and safe (working in the middle of a busy nightclub town not the best reputation) each day.

There are no non-drivers in the team- we are based at the far end of an industrial estate that is walking distance from nothing at all so it just wouldn’t work. We’re not required to check in when we get home or anything.

How long does the walk take and does the move (including packing up, walking over, setting up again) count as paid work time? If so I’d just take it as a free break and move on.

It’s not just about the wasted time though, it’s also about how disruptive it is to my/our working rhythm

Does it affect your pay due to less productivity? Or do you get paid the same regardless? If you get bonus' or anything at all affected I'd use that to raise it, but otherwise to be honest I'd just enjoy the little break each night
