Soaking peeled potatoes

Does everyone do this? If I’m not using peeled spuds straight away, I put them in water. DH remarked yesterday that it’s just a waste of water.

Yes, otherwise they discolour.

Yes I would

BarnacleBeasley · 15/09/2025 12:35

Would you not just cook them later in the same water?

They go brown if exposed to air, so yes.

NoahDia · 15/09/2025 12:35

So he lets them go brown when he does it? 😳

Favouritefruits · 15/09/2025 12:35

It’s perfectly normal to put peeled potatoes in water, they go grey if you don’t

It also helps remove the starch and they cook better (and taste better)

Inkytreasure · 15/09/2025 12:37

I have just peeled some potatoes for tonights dinner, they are sitting in a pan of water on the hob. I will be going out in a min and wont be back until later, dh will cook them as soon as he gets in at 4.30 and that will save me the time when I get back at 5pm.

I do this all the time, it's not a waste of water because we use the same water to boil them in.

BunnyLover7 · 15/09/2025 12:53

These were for roast potatoes so I wouldn’t use the water

Yes. I almost always peel potatoes in advance of cooking them and soak them in cold water.
My question is - if you’re not using them straight away why WOULD’NT you soak them?

LetsTryAgainNowThen · 15/09/2025 12:59

Yabvu 😉

Firstly, you don't need to peel them. Just roast with the skins on.

Secondly, water robs potatoes of flavour. As little should be used to cook them as possible according to Delia!

So no, I never soak potatoes.

youalright · 15/09/2025 13:00

Yes I never actually knew why I did it apart from my mum did it until I read this thread

CointreauVersial · 15/09/2025 13:02

Only to stop them going brown/grey. No other reason.

Don't you parboil them first?

Wouldn’t you use the water to parboil them before putting them in the oven?

RareLemur · 15/09/2025 13:03

YANBU, they need to be in water if not used straight away or they will discolour. even if you aren't parboiling before roasting, a about half a saucepan of water is hardly a massive waste of water.

Lakeyloo · 15/09/2025 13:14

It's hardly a bath load ! Why don't you par boil and then use some of the water to make your gravy ?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/09/2025 13:21

If he's that worried about the water then he can shave 10 seconds off his shower to make up the difference, or not flush a wee (that would save at least 5 saucepans worth at a guesstimate).

BadActingParsley · 15/09/2025 13:23

Don't you parboil them for roasties?

And to whoever suggested not peeling potatoes for roasties - how on earth do you get them crunchy?

Yes or they go that "bruise" colour. I put salt in mine to then change the water.

Coffeeishot · 15/09/2025 13:26

Oh I see you don't parboil for roast potatoes that is more to worry about than a bit of water 😀

I roast new/baby potatoes i do par boil but I've no issue with crispiness, I just whack up the oven then turn it down.

Noshadelamp · 15/09/2025 13:32

Waste of water? He could tip it on some plants or use it to boil other vegetables in if he's so bothered.
