Dusting

Ok, so this is a really weird thing to say but I’m 35 and I was never taught how to dust. I don’t mean things like photo frames, but in general. I think I have a really dusty house.

Anyone have tips for someone who just doesn’t know what to do? It gets on the skirting boards, light fittings/lamps, bookshelves, cushions etc, and I just feel a bit lost.

edit: I hoover daily. (We also have two cats and a dog)

A feather duster or similar for ceilings, skirting boards, pictures, photos, light fittings etc. I regularly damp dust them too. I go round the edges of carpet with a damp cloth too, as well as vacuuming.

Otherwise I use a microfibre cloth for furniture, window sills the rest of the time.

Skirting boards I use a damp cloth. Lamp shades, light fittings, tops of pictures I use a long feather duster. Furniture I use furniture Polish and a feather duster. I wash cushion covers, throws regularly.

I think damp dusting/using a product is what I need.

Thank you! I know it sounds pathetic to have got to this point in life.

Every month or so I scrub the skirting boards with one of those sponges with the handle you can put detergent in. Love that ;but it takes the paint off 😅)

I remember being shocked when my sister told me a good few years ago that her best friend used to dust EVERYDAY. I class that as being " house proud".

Personally when I hoover, which isn't weekly by any means, I dust the skirting boards and window ledges and things like the tv and the piano with the duster attachment .
Otherwise I will dust and polish surfaces when I notice they need them. And deal with cobwebs or dusty light fittings when they become apparant

So I'm afraid I'm not the best person to ask. I keep my kitchen and bathrooms clean. And I keep the rest of the house tidy . But I certainly don't obsess about dusting. But there again I don't have pets so I can understand that is more problematic.

I can't edit my post for some reason. I use polish and duster for furniture, not Polish and feather duster!

This is exactly what I'm like. Hate dusting with a passion. Or cleaning really 😂 hoover with the right attachment is a godsend and saves time too

I think some houses are just dustier than others. I don't know where it comes from! I dust hard surfaces weekly with a Swiffer duster, skirting boards and other furniture periodically when they need doing. I sometimes use my handheld Dyson attachment for skirting boards. If that isn't keeping the dust under control you'll just have to do it more often unfortunately. Maybe have a daily cushion plumping regimen before you hoover to shake off the dust?

Ugh, I think you’re right, ours is a dusty house to start with (old, high ceilings, many pets).

We hoover often (daily carpets, weekly more intense) but it just doesn’t make a difference. Going to look into damp/product dusting.
I get a really sore throat with over-use of cleaning products so hopefully can find something that works for us.
Honestly though…how have I bever learned to dust? My parents house isn’t dusty, but I’ve never witnessed them doing it.
