Moving to Hertfordshire

I’m currently living in North London but am thinking of moving out to Hertfordshire. I want somewhere with decent schools and ideally somewhere where property prices are more affordable than London. I’m open to suggestions. If you live somewhere you’d recommend, please tell me!

St Albans? I mean, it’s not cheap but you should get a bit more bang for your buck there.

kiwiblue · 14/09/2025 15:02

Hitchin - it's great. Good schools, nice vibe in the town, good connections.

Juneey · 14/09/2025 15:03

Hitchin. Great Primary and Secondary options. Still quite expensive, depending on location and property size

HeddaGarbled · 14/09/2025 15:04

Yes, Hitchin’s a good call. Also, Baldock.

kenyaswhiterefrigerator · 14/09/2025 15:07

St Albans or Harpenden

HEC2746 · 14/09/2025 15:13

Hitchin is probably the most obvious.Good schools at all levels, particularly secondary, and loads of the population are people who work in and have moved out of London. Depends what your budget is really and what you’re looking for?

Lutonsgirl · 14/09/2025 15:17

You may wish to look at bedfordshire (hitchin is not far from the county border), where you may get more for your money

Edit to say not Luton!

Nitgel · 14/09/2025 15:19

Stay in London. How about the border Southgate, barnet etc. Herts services are useless. Hitchin is cut off and not very interesting. St Albans overpriced..

HEC2746 · 14/09/2025 18:37

Now the OP should take a look and go wherever she wants but I’m really curious why Hitchin is “cut off”?

Yeah, it's on the Thameslink, hardly cut off?! It is further away from London than St Albans I guess?

Ilovemyshed · 14/09/2025 18:39

I’m amazed at the recommendations for Hitchin, its totally soulless!

overwhelmedsinglema · 14/09/2025 18:39

Hertford has great schools but the town is seriously lacking if you’re used to London!

Yes, it’s a lot further north in the county than St Albans but it seems pretty well connected via train. Roadwise it isn’t as good as St Albans is right by the M25 and M1.

It really isn't, have you been there recently?! There's always something going on, food markets etc, events, festivals, each street has a week where it's celebrated, and there's loads of lovely independent shops.

Sheffters · 14/09/2025 20:09

Ware is beautiful

HeddaGarbled · 14/09/2025 21:47

What does soulless mean anyway? It’s just one of those daft insults that get thrown around by inarticulate people.

yummyscummymummy01 · 14/09/2025 22:40

Thanks so much for the suggestions. We love Hertford and Ware but haven’t looked at Hitchin yet so will definitely plan a day trip there. We’ve found both Ware and Hertford are still quite expensive so are looking at other options too.

Ware is nicer than hertford imo, hertford is just antique shops! what about Berkhampstead? very well known schools

Mmmkaay · 14/09/2025 23:03

Another vote for Hitchin. I love a mootch around the town on a Saturday, there's always something going on. Lots of lovely cafes and independent shops, some very nice restaurants. You could have a look at the surrounding villages too, there are some really lovely properties.

MyCatPrefersPeaches · 15/09/2025 07:07

How often do you need to travel into London and which mainline station would you need to arrive into? Start there and work outwards.

St Albans is lovely if expensive. We also liked the look of Hitchin. Baldock is nice but quite small. Hertford is good as you have two stations. Bishops Stortford is a good option if Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale for the Victoria line works for you. Places like Berkhamsted and Tring are expensive but easy to get into London from.

If you don’t need station access, you could look at villages. Generally, it’s a well trodden route and towns with stations and good rail connections will be more expensive, especially nearer the station.

kenyaswhiterefrigerator · 17/09/2025 19:40

Just in case anyone is searching the top ten were as follows. Seems reasonable but I grew up in Harpenden so it would be my no 1

1 Hitchin
2 St Albans
3 Hertford
4 Berkhampstead
5 Harpenden ( we were robbed)
6 Welwyn Garden City
7 Roystone
8 Broxbourne
9 Kings Langley

Blingismything · 17/09/2025 19:44
