Moving to Shrewsbury from London

Hi

I am looking at moving to Shrewsbury in New Year from London and will be buying on my own. I know it will be a big change but all my friends now moved out of London to various parts of the UK.

My question is does anyone know of any meet ups or groups that are friendly and welcoming? I plan to join the gym but would be nice to also meet other people in Shrewsbury.

I am late 50s but very young at heart.

thanks

Hey I moved from Birmingham to Shrewsbury 4 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. My biggest advice would be join the FB page ‘For the love of Shrewsbury’. There is soooo much going on which is talked about in the page. What sort of stuff do you enjoy? There is park run, running & walking clubs, various barre and Pilates groups, dancing, rowing clubs, language groups. Have you decided on an area to live yet? Honestly there is so much going on you’ll be fine. I am pretty antisocial and haven’t joined any clubs but run alone, have met a lot of people via work now. Welcome and I hope you love it as much as me!

Hi OP, we're moving your thread to our Chat topic as we think that's a better fit for it than Site Stuff Smile

I’m from Shrewsbury and wouldn’t describe it as particularly friendly. It’s an odd place but you might be able to swerve all that as you won’t have to endure growing up there! However there are lots of clubs, the University of the third age is very active and social.

This has not been my experience as an ‘outsider’. How is it an odd place?

A lot of the people I grew up with ended up with mental health issues. It’s a pretty place but with that youth townie boredom and lots of drug use. We used to call it the ‘Shrewsbury disease’ as friend after friend stopped functioning.

I have not seen that side of things at all. I work amongst the community here (Community Nurse) and don't really see a difference between this and other areas I have worked. Shame you have experienced this.

OP I think what makes it unique is the amount of visitors we have, there is something going on all the time in and around the town and it gives it a lovely vibe.
