What’s your laundry routine?

Aurielle · 14/09/2025 03:04

Based on another thread about smells and a slightly dull thread but I’m curious. I have really curbed back on scented products and am using unscented products more and more. I now use unscented laundry detergent, no softener or scent beads. Sometimes I think maybe my washing doesn’t smell as fresh as it used to with added fragrance. What is your laundry routine that keeps everything fresh and soft?

Unscented washing powder from Tesco.

ReignOfError · 14/09/2025 07:39

Sainsbury's own brand non-bio powder and hanging my washing out whenever possible.

deirdrerasheed · 14/09/2025 07:45

I dry outside when I can. Finish off in dryer softens it up.

Wonderwall23 · 14/09/2025 07:47

Persil non-bio. I have probably fallen for the marketing but did switch to something cheaper once and DS's eczema flared up so have just stuck with it.

I don't see the point of fabric conditioner but then I've never used it so don't know what I'm missing.

Hang out on line if possible but otherwise on airers. I do an extra spin and make sure it's not left in machine and is spread out so I don't get the musty smell. I've never thought about the scent but IMO as long as not musty then I wouldn't care if it didn't smell of anything 'nice'.

vincettenoir · 14/09/2025 07:48

Pods, no softener.

Olive42 · 14/09/2025 07:49

Either Sainsbury’s own biological liquid or Persil from time to time. With a scoop of soda crystals in wash. Dry outside when can. Dry towels in tumble dryer with dryer balls for 20 minutes, then they finish drying on airer. Keeps them soft.

PersephoneParlormaid · 14/09/2025 07:51

Tesco washing powder and a small splash of Comfort. All towels dried in the dryer for softness.

Your laundry is fresh and clean . It's you that think it has to have an aroma and be supersoft ( which means basically a load of chemicals & animal fat )
Dry outside for as long as the weather will allow .

MNJury · 14/09/2025 07:58

Is it just that you are so used to the smell of the added fragrances to indicate "fresh", or is the washing active smelling of anything musty or similar? If so, I find it is important to run a cleaner/soda crystals/empty hot wash and clean the drawer, seals and filter regularly, and to hang the washing soon after it finishes.

Titasaducksarse · 14/09/2025 07:59

Fairy washing liquid and fairy conditioner...due to allergies.
I personally cannot stand over fragranced washing.

squashyhat · 14/09/2025 08:03

Stuff everything into the washbasket until it's full, stuff everything into the machine until it's full (no faffing about separating lights and darks), add cheapest washing liquid, run, dry outside if possible, put away (no ironing), repeat.

FlowersandElephants · 14/09/2025 08:04

Oh you’re all going to hate me!
Bio liquid or pods.
Whatever fabric conditioner I have, I change it depending on what I feel like.
Scent boosters with bedding, blankets and towels.
Hanging outside as much as possible.

I also always have scented candles or wax melts on the go

LoafofSellotape · 14/09/2025 08:11

Dirty clothes go on the landing by the top stair every evening, whoever gets up first puts them in the machine with Ariel Cold wash gel and a splash of fabric conditioner. On the line if it's dry and in the drier if it's not.

MellowPinkDeer · 14/09/2025 08:13

Costco Kirkland capsules, Kirkland softener ( blue one) and dettol anti bacterial. I could never go unscented I love the smell! I hang outside whenever I can and tumble dry underwear and towels all year round!

oh and a colour catcher sheet. I have one of those washing baskets that separates darks light and whites so just chuck them in as they are full!

stayathomer · 14/09/2025 08:17

Another for persil non bio because of eczema, line dry if possible then twenty minutes in tumble drier. Lately been using the tumble drier more as heating not on/ not on long enough so they’re just sitting on the clothes horse! I do sometimes wonder if I’m missing out by not using fabric softener

KingscoteStaff · 14/09/2025 08:45

Person non-bio
whitener powder (the pink tub) for whites
dry on line if poss
except kids’ sports kit which goes on airer in bathroom and seems to dry in about 20 mins!

sueelleker · 14/09/2025 08:55

Fairy non-bio pods, Vanish (or similar) stain remover, water softener tablets (I live in a very hard water area) and Lenor Outdoorables conditioner. Line dry when possible.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 14/09/2025 08:57

Fairy bio for whites and (separate wash) pet bedding
Fairy non bio for coloured clothes
Line dry when weather permits, otherwise clothes airer

Never used fabric conditioner, loathe the smell and feel. I'm in a soft water area and all my washing is incredibly soft as is.
