Semaglutide Tablets - Clinical Trials - Would you?

Ignoring for a minute the fact that it appears the NHS is giving away our details...

I received this in the post today. I do meet the criteria (T2 diabetic over 55 etc etc).

I genuinely have no idea what to do.

WWYD?

Yeah. They already exist as Rybelsus. Wish l could take them!

You can only go really low on Rybelsus.

gingercat02 · 13/09/2025 11:22

Rybelsus has been around for years. Most of our T2 patients are on it 3rd line.
Metformin then Dapagliflozin then Rybelsus.

Also how do we get people on drug trials unless the NHS is involved?

The NHS is not giving away your details! At some point you likely gave your consent to be contacted about potential trials you may be eligible for/interested in. The trial should have also been granted approval for this type of contact as part of the ethical approval. I’m also assuming that you’ve been contacted by someone who is on the research team for the trial at a hospital.

If you’re not sure you should be able to discuss it with someone and see if it’s right for you. There will also likely be a screening process to check that you meet all of the criteria.

it may be a placebo controlled trial and if it’s also blinded you won’t know whether you’ve been assigned to receive semaglutide or not. It’s also usually the case that you’ll have more checks than you would otherwise get if not in the trial.

The NHS can’t offer patients new drugs or treatments without people taking part in trials! So it’s definitely worth exploring.

Thanks for the responses. I think the "details" comment was because I was surprised to hear directly from the third party rather than via the NHS. But that's all fine.

I also agree about doing it for "the cause", as well as possibly benefiting myself of course, but I am a bit of a coward and quite risk averse (I was the one not taking MDMA at raves back in the day!).

Right. I think I'll do it. I'll let you know at the end how it went. Assuming you're still here in five years 😄

Thanks again.

I took part in this but got randomised onto the placebo after 3 months, continued to take the placebo until I persuaded my GP to prescribe them for me. Agreed to stay in touch with the study team and fill in their questionnaires.

Did they tell you they were giving you the placebo then?

No, but it was obvious as all the side effects went away and my appetite came back.

Kaggi9 · 17/09/2025 22:15

My husband has diabetes and is on Rybelsus. He lost about 3 stone but doesn’t really get the suppression or side effects now he’s been on it for a while. Interestingly, at his last appointment the specialist suggested the injections instead of the tablets!

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 17/09/2025 22:15

Ooh, this sounds optimistic! Are tablet form going to be available more widely, do you think?

Gladysknightgottogetaholdofmyself · 17/09/2025 22:20

I'm on them started on 3mg upped to 7mg no side effects.
I qualify because of health criteria.
Losing weight 👍

afaloren · 17/09/2025 22:29

DM was on these. She was moved to the placebo group (she could tell as like a PP all her side effects disappeared) so now she’s on the jabs. Shame as she found the tablets very effective and the jabs less so for her.

scrunchSE18 · 17/09/2025 22:36

I am on this trial. I’m currently on the run in stage - 2 months where they slowly up the mg. We’ll see what happens next and whether I get put on the next mg up or on the placebo. Like an earlier poster it will be easy to tell.
