Jobs for someone with anxiety

qim · 13/09/2025 11:00

I have been a SAHM for nearly 10years. DC off to school now. Lots of spare time on hands. I’m looking at getting into work, but no idea where to start. I also suffer from anxiety and low self-confidence. How do I improve myself?. As for my qualifications I have a degree in teaching. But no real experience in schools as of now. Any idea what jobs will suit someone like me with little experience? But I have a zeal to learn and also am a quick learner. Any advice is appreciated TIA?

Do you want to go anywhere near a school? Or as far from one as humanly possible?

Finance jobs are generally ok for people who need a bit of structure, routine, and to be left alone somewhat..

@topcat2014Volunteered at a school once and was treated like shit (not a single hi, thank you or whatever). So working at schools makes me anxious. Was a very bad experience.

@topcat2014This comment made me laugh so hard. Thanks

Seasonal jobs are being advertised, I've seen a few seasonal remote customer service jobs recently. Were on the Work From Home Hub website. Also retail. I appreciate they may not be long-term career aspirations, but a short-term job may help ease some anxiety and give you a focus on what direction you do/don't want to go in

JurassicPark4Eva · 13/09/2025 11:11

Work on your anxiety first. See the GP. Medication if appropriate. Talking therapies. Self esteem work. Help yourself first.

Look at education, training, classes etc to get yourself into habits around talking to people, applying yourself to working ie study, routines outside the home and so on.

You may also benefit from speaking to the DWP about work coaching to get assistance with CVs, job applications, interview training and so on.

I wouldn't advise working in a school then or teaching. You need to think about what sort of things trigger your anxiety. Is it social interactions? Confrontation or feeling people are judging you? Or just condlfidence? Loud noise? Having to process lots at the same time? Then you can decide if you want to work with people or on your own. In a team or individual autonomy. With the public or backroom. Indoors / outdoors etc.

You could consider doing voluntary work to build up your confidence....maybe with a charity or somewhere like the national trust?

@JurassicPark4EvaThanks I have seen the Gp and I have controllable level of anxiety so medication not needed. Just my low self confidence when among people makes a anxious. Also I practice mindfulness and go for walks and being around DC make me feel the best. It’s only when I tend to be around new people I feel hard to speak up as I am an intovert.

Do you need to earn a certain amount?

I have a more conventional job PT, but I also walk dogs in my spare time. (I did the relevant qualifications and got insurance before starting.) Minimal human interaction, lovely clients, and I often listen to podcasts while we walk.

Office cleaning is very low stress. DW has a couple of offices that she cleans once a week. No one ever moans, and it's not like you have a "lady of the house" going round with the white gloves on the fireplace..

qim · 13/09/2025 11:53

@JustGoClickLikeALightSwitchMoney is not a problem really. It’s more like I want to improve myself and gain confidence. I always excelled academically but grew up to be a socially awkward person. Lol

7There aren't particular jobs for people with anxiety. You have to work out what you want to do, what you have the skills for or can obtain skills for. Then what your triggers are and how to manage them.

Doing a fulfilling job where you can manage your own triggers is best.

My sister is in this position. In all fairness she doesn't need to work because her other half works full time and gets good pay but has been a SAHM for 15 years and wants to do something now they're all in high school. But has bad social anxiety since childhood (we suspect autistic). Do you want a bit of pocket money or a career? You could look into self employment. I was a lash tech for a bit and it took 9ff surprisingly quick and I was earning about 300-500 pw. Otherwise I would begin with your anxiety which is what my sister is doing too because she couldn't get through job interviews without crying throughout or throwing up beforehand etc. Volunteering is the way to begin, and consider CBT therapy

CitrusNConfectionsHotel · 13/09/2025 12:01

Consider things like librarian, cleaning, shelf filling in evenings, self employment etc.

vincettenoir · 13/09/2025 12:04

Do you plan to work solo or is the plan to work up towards being in an environment with other adults?

qim · 13/09/2025 12:10

@vincettenoir I’m okay to work among other adults, just want to be figure out what to do.

as @CitrusNConfectionsHotelsuggested I think volunteering at a local library would be good to begin with!

I'd definitely go into it with the mindset that getting a job is really hard at the moment you're up against so many. Particularly Any remote roles. So please don't think it's a personal thing against you (although you will want to give yourself the best chance possible)and you'll have to develop a bit of a thick skin.

Equally you could find something really quick so fingers crossed.

Ficklebricks · 13/09/2025 13:16

Can you teach adults? Deliver in person or online courses around your subject area - data analysis, creative writing, train the trainer, pottery etc.

I know a few ex-teachers who much prefer a room full of adults to a room full of kids!

Doorbellsandknockers · 14/09/2025 07:25

OP, what interests you, what are you good at, what are your triggers?

I don't think we can assume everyone with anxiety needs the same job. I'm a high(ish) earner I previously suffered from anxiety at work. All these jobs people are suggesting would not have helped me and I thrived as a project lead. So the details are important.
