I need to head off this cold

Woke up with sore throat and a bit bunged up. Am giving an uncancellable work presentation on Tuesday. Any tips on warding this off? I need to not be spluttering everywhere, and also not make everyone ill.

The best thing for fighting illness is to be properly hydrated and to sleep well, so make sure you drink plenty of water today. Take vitamins, and eat extra nutritious
Elderberry tea is good. Thyme for a cough.
Garlic and onions have antiviral properties too.

Hand hygiene and also gargling with listerine plenty

Night nurse before bed if its likely to affect your sleep, as broken sleep always makes me more ill

Boots Dual Defence nasal spray if you can get hold of one. Night nurse at bedtime. Covid test and can you do it online.

DancingNotDrowning · 13/09/2025 09:39

It’s boring but sleep, proper food and pints and pints of liquid.

If you can bear it, eat a raw garlic clove, or if not, get some garlic supplements.

Rest as much as you can, try to avoid anything that makes you inhale deeply, to keep it away from your chest. If you can sleep, so much the better.

Stay hydrated.

Take anti-inflammatories, e.g. aspirin, ibuprofen.

Try not to cough or blow your nose more than you can help as it will just inflame everything more.

Vicks First Defence Nasal spray if you can get hold of one. Claims to stop a cold in its tracks and it works!! I swear by it. First sign I am coming down with anything I use this.

I got mine from Amazon because I live in the middle of nowhere. Boots may have it, or a good pharmacy if you have one near.

Rightandwrong · 13/09/2025 09:50

Lots of sleep, lots of water , and taking paracetamol would be my way of heading off the cold.

CatInspector · 13/09/2025 09:50

Yet one of those First Defence Nasal sprays -use the full amount as directed and don't miss one
Chicken broth, lots of sleep, fresh air and fruit and veg.
Get some Cold and Flu caps in just in case

Lauren1983 · 13/09/2025 09:54

I am currently doing the same so you have my best wishes! I have been taking First Defence which normally helps and getting as much rest as possible. I also recommend Sterimar nasal spray if you do get worse. It is just salt water but I find it great at reducing nasal drip which makes any cough worse. This clears me out and reduces coughing fits.

Thank you. You too! Good luck

I also use this and it has always worked for me. It is easy to use and not too expensive at £6-8 depending on retailer.
I keep one in the medicine cabinet to use at the at first signs of a cold starting. Handy to have on hand.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 13/09/2025 10:24

It's Saturday today. Surrender to the cold. Watch rubbish TV. Slouch on sofa. Indulge it for the weekend and you should be well on the mend by Monday night, Tuesday.

I second this. Got mine on Amazon with next day delivery, also it was cheaper than in Boots.

Echinacea tablets, vitamin c and zinc always work for me. Failing that a hot curry always stops the cold from starting 🤒

guestusername · 13/09/2025 10:51

The hottest curry you can stand. It will make you sweat but it’s supposed to!

I find that this only works when you’re at the first stages. Once the cold has had time to bed in, it’s in and that’s that. Hope you feel better soon

Gettingbysomehow · 13/09/2025 11:18

Make a very strong tea with dried or fresh elderberries and drink three times a day. It's fantastic stuff.

shivermetimbers77 · 13/09/2025 11:28

I echo what others have said, plus on the day some Sudafed max strength tablets should power you through if you’re feeling a bit rough .. plus when I’m bunged up decongestant nasal spray is the only thing that guarantees a good night of sleep , which is of course the most healing thing. Good luck!

Titasaducksarse · 13/09/2025 11:37

Lots of fluids but I like to make a hot ginger, lemon and honey water. All good stuff.

Rainbowqueeen · 13/09/2025 11:53

Vicks on your chest and also on your heels when you go to bed.

rest and lots of fluids

fantom · 13/09/2025 11:55

Really high dose of vitamin C and Night Nurse

Hedgerowbustle · 13/09/2025 11:56

Personally I've found 20mins of cardio at first signs of a cold really helps! Lots of fluids, pre and probiotics, vitamins and fluids. Lemsip max or similar and rest etc if it gets a grip.

Icecreamandcoffee · 13/09/2025 11:59

Lots of fluid, vitamins, take extra vitamin c, plenty of sleep and rest. Eat a meal with plenty of onions or garlic, for some reason it always seems to work with me.
