Ocado - how many bags do you reckon….?

Is always the question they ask when you’re handing them back. I think I sometimes underestimate so they don’t think I’m a liar, but then I’m thinking….why not go the opposite way? Why not say ‘oh around 50’ every single time and get a £5 off my bill?

Has anyone EVER had the amount they’ve said contested?

I only have about 7 or 8 bags a week and always give them back the next week. Hardly a hardship to count those lol.

FurForksSake · 12/09/2025 17:14

I give back all my stretchy plastic inside the bags so let them know that and then say 10-20 which is usually about right.

I bag mine up in 10s and hand them back every few weeks. It only takes a couple of minutes if you do it regularly.

I mean there are lots of things I want to do regularly but bagging up Ocado bags in tens is really not one of them

They always overestimate if you aren't sure. I've talked the delivery driver down in number before

Why?

When I unpack the shopping i count them all into a one bag then sharpie the number on it.

This is a joke isn’t it? Please?

Yeah, it’s the highlight of my empty week.

Or, you know, you get the bags from last week out of the cupboard, master counting to ten or so (fill my endless free time with basic mathematics training dontcha know) and hand them over.

I don’t return every week. But even if I did. Why would you actually bother counting? If it’s always ‘around ten’ wouldn’t you just say ‘ten’ every week?

Why are you so snippy 😂 You asked, people answered.

Nope, not even vaguely. It takes zero time, I’ve got to collect them all off the floor when I’ve unpacked the shopping. Counting is well within my skill set, finding the sharpie is the hardest part of the endeavour.

Olinguito · 13/09/2025 10:44

I never considered not counting the ten or so bags I return each week. It's not exactly an onerous task.

Motnight · 13/09/2025 10:45

Fatandfluffy · 12/09/2025 14:05

Fuck me, do you? Mine are stuffed in a cupboard all together - you genuinely spend time counting through each bag you store? Must have more time on your hands/ less interesting things to do than me!

I use the time that I don't spend starting a post about plastic bags to count them.

minipie · 13/09/2025 10:47

I return every week and it’s generally around 10 bags so that’s what I say. Sure some weeks are a bit less and some a bit more so it evens out.

Duckyfondant · 13/09/2025 10:48

Fatandfluffy · 12/09/2025 23:27

Why?

Because they more than doubled the number and I would have felt dishonest otherwise

anonymoususer9876 · 13/09/2025 10:55

It tells me on the receipt. You’re charged 10p for each bag used. So last week it was 13.

Maybe because our lives are so dull and empty that we have all this extra time to use unnecessary extra words when chatting to the Ocado delivery person while we hand our bags back.

Anyway, I use my Ocado bags as part of my 'look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves' strategy to riches. Every time I give back the bags they refund more than the number of bags they charge for so even in my limited use of their delivery services I reckon I'm a whole £1.20 up so you never know, one day I might have made enough to buy something from the comedically overpriced Natoora range such as a £3.95 pepper.

Well I often fall into the 'too honest for my own good' category but even I let it slide when I end up profiting from the Great Ocado Plastic Bags Return.

As per my previous post, I'm saving up for a Natoora pepper and at this rate, I might have made enough by about 2043.

I've done that for a while re the stretchy plastic. I was told off by a driver a couple of months ago who said OCADO couldn't take it due to contamination. I explained it was clean and washed. But no. Puzzled I indeed checked on their website and it is bags only with future plans for scrunchy/stretchy plastic. I think that must be a change back.

AdoraBell · 13/09/2025 11:05

I’ve only ordered once with them so I will count the bags for when the next order arrives.

FurForksSake · 13/09/2025 11:27

We always say it’s not just bags and they take it. Assume it all goes in one big silo of stretchy plastic so it can’t really matter?

got £3 off today. He asked one of my kids that just said thirty 😆

Do you speak to people so rudley IRL OP? Fuck me, nothing worse than attitude

InMyOpenOnion · 13/09/2025 11:42

I get an Ocado delivery every week, always about the same size. So I just say 13 as that's usually how many they bring it in. I don't count though.

JJZ · 13/09/2025 11:44

They sometimes forget to ask me (I reuse my bags for various things so rarely return) and they always add some returned bags on anyway.

WonderfulSmith · 13/09/2025 11:47

I usually say 15. The drivers are allowed to say anything up to 100. If they like you then will add on more and their thank you!

I remember during Covid there was about a year when they didn’t take them back. I ended up keeping them in the loft!

Fatandfluffy · 13/09/2025 14:38

After Covid I made loads from the returns!
