What do you think of the word “Brit”?

Is it true that a lot of British people get upset when they are called “Brits” as opposed to “Britons”? Do you prefer the latter? Or, do you prefer “Britannics”?

I agree with pp who said Britons were the original inhabitants of Britain - or descendants thereof. The Anglo Saxons arrived and overpowered them. But they cling on in remote and inaccessible places - such as the editorial pages of the Daily Express.

Brits is a fairly neutral slang term or abbreviation , surely? Whereas the word Britisher , popular in the US , sounds sort of insulting...not sure why.

To be fair, there is no evidence they over powered anyone.

there was a power vacuum following the collapse of the Roman empire. Celtic society had been so integrated into Roman Empire that there was no strong Celtic leadership.

also - as DNA analysis shows, most people have been living in places where their families have been since the Iron Age.

the reality is the rulers change, and with it the language of government and commerce. Yes, there are some Anglo Saxons in UK, but they’ve intermingled with the majority Celtic population.

the reality is that the UK is still genetically ‘Briton’ but they’ve just adopted a different language and culture ( which is French with a smattering of Anglo saxon)

Doesn't bother me at all, seems a handy shorthand for 'British person'. Do wince at Briton though, that's more of a racial thing and it's weird when it's applied to all British people. It's like calling all Scottish people Picts, or all Irish people Celts. Don't particularly mind Pom, and do rather like Mid-Atlantic Island Monkey. Never heard Brittanics, but probably wouldn't much care. Prefer it to Briton at least.

I'm Scottish and refer to myself that way.

I'm a British citizen in the sense that that is the status my passport confers upon me.

"Who are the Brwitons ?"

"Well, we all are. We are all Britons. And I, Arthur, am your King!"

If only I was as knowledgable as the encyclopaedia Britannica.

Brit sounds like something an American would generically call someone from the UK.
Britannic? Never have I ever heard that used; sounds a bit archaic like Encyclopedia Britannica.
I suppose being called Brit is better than being called a 'Limey'.

Which is, of course American ...

And you, OP? What do you think? What nationality are you? Why are you asking? And why do you think that anyone might even give a shit?

<fat chance the OP will actually return to the thread, but you never know>
