Where do you hang your towels?

Just shifting around bathroom things and realised our hand towels hang right next to the toilet. We have a coat stand for shower towels in the corner of the bathroom - opposite the toilet. We don't really have anywhere else for it though.

Am I overthinking this? It's normal (if you don't live in a mansion) isn't it?

My shower towel is on a towel rail in the ensuite, there's a hand towel on the radiator. DH hangs his towel on a hook on the back of the door. DS hangs his over the banisters, as do his brothers when they are home. It's fine, I think.

FridayIsItFridayYet · 11/09/2025 15:11

So, close to the toilet too then?

Heated towel rail other side of the sink from the loo.

Towel rail on the door?

We have a towel rail above the radiators and all the bath towels go there. We also have a metal "loop" towel rail near the basin, for the hand towel. I wouldn't really want my towel next to the toilet, I don't think. You can buy towel rails that just hook over the radiator - no drilling required.

On a towel rail next to toilet.

On a towel rail next to toilet.

Same, nowhere else for it to go🤷‍♀️
Just pop the loo seat down before you flush (and hope the kids do too!) and don't think about it.
The hospitals are hardly over run with people dying from using a towel next to the toilet!

Bitzee · 11/09/2025 17:20

In the main bathroom we have a half size heated towel rail above the bath (separate shower) for drying and 2 hooks for additional towels on the back of the door. So not near the loo but I don’t actually think it’s a problem that yours are so long as no one flushes with the lid open… if they do then that’s pretty grim…

GentleSheep · 11/09/2025 17:24

Hooks on the back of the bathroom door. Tiny bathroom so not much choice!

Redrosesposies · 11/09/2025 17:27

Well my bathroom is less than 6ft both ways so everything is near the toilet but the shower screen has a rail on it which we use for hand towels and it folds against the wall and the other rail is on the opposite wall above the radiator so they are a far away as they can be. Shower towels are aired on the bannister rail before going back in the bathroom.
The toilet lid is always closed for flushing in our house.

AdventuresWithAnimals · 11/09/2025 17:34

Hand towels go on the radiators, probably a few metres away from the toilet. My shower towel and my partners are mostly washed after each shower because I hate having towels hanging around our bathroom or bedroom, but sometimes the kids use their towels again and they just hang it over the radiator in their bathroom or on a hook in their bedroom.

Digdongdoo · 11/09/2025 17:36

Hooks on the bathroom door. Right in front of the toilet. Just shut the loo lid before you flush.

TheSandgroper · 11/09/2025 17:43

I don’t have special hand towels. We just have normal towels and, after handwashing, hands get dried on the nearest one.

Upstairs bathroom is tiny so hand towel hangs on towel rail next to sink but the sink is in actual fact a few steps opposite the toilet. Hadn’t occurred to me. The bath towels hang on the door but sometimes in the banisters to air dry properly as the bathroom being so small can get condensation easily even with the tiny window open/rubbish extractor fan on!
downstairs bathroom (mainly for kids as it’s a bath) their bath towels hang on the back of the door (fortunate to have a L shaped bathroom) so quite far away and hand towel is on towel rail directly above the radiator

Natsku · 12/09/2025 06:13

Hand towels are on hooks next to the toilet - only place in the downstairs loo as it's tiny so every wall is right next to the toilet. Upstairs is bigger but the hooks were already there so don't see the point in putting new ones up.

My shower towel is hung on the stair gate at the top of the stairs - only reason I haven't taken the gate down as youngest is 7 now! DD hangs hers on the back of her door. DS's hangs on a bar in the lounge and OH usually has 2 or 3 towels hanging in various places round the house as he will only dry his hands on his own towels, not the family handtowel.

You wash your shower towel every day? Wow. That's a lot of washing/drying.

My towel goes on a heated towel rail /radiator thing, but as the heating isn't on, it doesn't dry properly. It's the furthest point from the toilet

DiscoBeat · 12/09/2025 06:56

In the bathrooms we have heated towel rails which I love (not used those until recently) but they're away from the toilets, and the hand towels on rings near the basins the other side so not near. The WC is much smaller but the hand towel ring is still not close to the toilet. We did think of that when we fitted the though.

So do guests use your personal bath towels then?

mamagogo1 · 12/09/2025 07:16

En suites are typically compact so you don’t get much choice. Mine are high on the wall above radiator, next to loo

TheSandgroper · 12/09/2025 07:17

@DiscoBeat if I have guests, fresh towels are available. I don’t mix germs. But I have ponced a towel for Christmas.

It’s an extra 2 towels per day usually so not much really. As a family, we do loads of sport and we rescue and foster various wildlife/animals so we have a lot of washing anyway.

Washing towels after each use is such a ridiculous waste of energy. If you have loads of washing you should be making efforts to reduce it, not doing more for the sake of it.

Plastictreees · 12/09/2025 08:28

We put ours on heated towel racks/radiators to dry and then either hang them up in the bathrooms or put them in the towel cupboard!

Soontobe60 · 12/09/2025 08:33

We have a tiny bathroom but had a tall ladder radiator fitted next to the door and can fit two bath sheets and a hand towel on it to dry.
I get changed in our spare bedroom and leave my towel draped over a chair in front of the bedroom radiator.
We wash our bath towels every 2 weeks, hand towels weekly. After all, when we use them we are actually clean!

Thanks for the judgement. 🙃 We do lots of things to save energy and help the planet, but this is one thing we won’t be changing. No one is perfect, I dare say even you.

Yeah I do judge that to be honest. You'd have to hang them somewhere to dry anyway so it's a fools errand. Just buy some hooks.
