When is reasonable to tell your team you're leaving your job?

So, if you have a 3 month notice period.

Run a small team of 4, one of which is your deputy.

Let's assume you're leaving on 30 Nov.

When would you tell them?

I would tell them as soon as I've handed in my notice. These things always get out, you don't want your team finding out in the office kitchen or something.

Once I'd handed in my notice. I might give my line manager a weeks grace to make a plan but your team will need to prepare for your handover in case a replacement isn't there yet.

As soon as my notice is accepted.

As soon as it’s official and there is a plan in place of what is going to happen. I think it’s better to be clear (e.g. the post will be advertised both internally and externally, or another member of the company is going to run the department, etc). I wouldn’t just tell them until management have confirmed the next steps as nobody likes being in limbo.

As soon as I'd handed in my notice I would tell the deputy first, as a courtesy, then the rest of the team.
