Ear Piercing closed up

My child had her ears pierced a bit over a year ago
She's been wearing them day and night because they weren't the kind that healed really well. (But never infected or anything). At high school no earrings allowed. So she's been taking them out in the day.
.... And now one has healed up.....

What should I do? Should I take her to an ear piercing place to see if they can repierce?
Or is this something she should just wait till she's 16 and do again if she wants?

I'm so annoyed that this has happened now

I would wait until she has finished school and then let her decide. Even if you get it redone now she will still have to take it out for school.

You can by plastic see through earrings which are usually acceptable. A pricing of a year should not be closed.

Take her to a tattoo shop where they price with needles. They may be able to reopen it.

I have done this myself with a needle - you start with thinner earrings and move up!

I’d be incredibly surprised if an earlobe piercing that’s been in place for a year has closed in a matter of hours. It’s more likely that your DD has irritated the hole and can’t get the jewellery back in.

Well they were never perfect
Still bled occasionally
One was always harder to get in than the other

So I can believe that it's healed up for her

Just not sure what the best thing to do is now

I did it myself by jabbing it with a stud every day for 2 or 3 weeks.

My ear piercings haven't healed well, I often find it difficult to get earrings in but the hole is still there, it just takes a bit of time to get an earring back in. They've been done for over a year but still get lumpy and gooey
Worth trying to see if you can get an earring back in. Try from the back of the lobe that's sometimes easier

If she can’t wear earrings at school how is that going to work with a new piercing that cannot be removed for several weeks?

It honestly won’t have closed completely after a year of wearing earrings. The lobe is likely swollen because she’s been prodding at it for ages and getting the angle wrong - I’ve had over 20 piercings and they simply don’t close that quickly unless cartilage and very, very new.

However if she’s still having issues after a year and can’t wear jewellery in school - I would take them both out, let them heal over and see if she can get them re-pierced by a proper piercer when she’s older.

I would take her to a tattoo parlor/percier and ask them what to do. When my daughter couldn't get earrings in we went to the percier who did them who flushed them through. If we had to have them repercied again we would of wanted them done with a needle to be more accurate - definitely not a gun as they would need to be really accurate.

LoafofSellotape · 11/09/2025 07:44

I've done mine by numbing with ice then putting the earring back in.

What do you mean when you say flushed them through?

The hole was blocked up with debris from stuff like soap/conditioner/body fat
