Fuck fuck fuck just lost £600 due to our own stupidity

Help. DH just booked a ferry crossing. It came to £600. Which was already steep. As he booked it, I had a look on my phone and realised it was only £400 if booked through a benefit scheme I am member of. He had just verified payment but said no worries and cancelled it straight away within 5 min of booking and paying (not that it mattered) and I booked it at the cheaper price. I asked him to print the cancellation off and saw that the cancellation fee was £600. It doesn't look like the ticket was refundable. I feel absolutely sick that we have basically just lost £600 (and paid basically £1000 for the ferry crossing). I'm not sure what I'm expecting anyone to do. One of us will ring them tomorrow but I'm not having any hope. Any words of advice or stupid fuck ups you did and how long it took you to recover from it?

Why not say both your husband and you booked tickets not knowing the other was doing it and now you’ve ended up with 4 tickets and could they refund 2?
Failing that is there any way of selling them on?

I sympathise. Last year my husband lost his keys, we knew they were in the house as he had got in but he looked for hours and eventually worried that he’d left them in the door on the outside and someone had walked past and taken them. Sounds silly but having let himself into the house and having searched and searched it did seem like something like that must have happened. We called an emergency locksmith to replace the locks at a cost of £650 - that evening I moved my work bag and his keys had fallen from the hallway table between the folds of the exterior of my bag (quite a big bag). We had even looked in the handbag but missed them being hidden in the fabric of the outside. I felt gutted too.

its definitely worth a phone call tomorrow, if not can you cancel the £400 one? Good luck xx

£650?
WOW !

Thank you all. Your stories have already helped me to calm down. Both bookings are visible in my account with them, so maybe they will refund one of them. I take anything at this point. The money is still pending on my banking app. It's Schrödinger's ferry ticket now.

I once tried to book a hol and pay a deposit but the holiday companies payments system kept melting down, so I ended up booking with another company. I later found out that the deposit payment had gone through (£200) I tried allsorts to be refunded and they refused, so I put a horrible trust pilot review up. I was given my money backing 24 hrs.
Sometimes this is the only thing that works.

My heart goes out to you all.
I obviously paid idiot tax in the past but this was a new level.
Anyway, good news! I rang them and explained the situation and asked whether there was anything they could do.
The lovely person just asked for both booking numbers and then said they were fully refunding the money and not to worry.
In the best way possible that left me speechless. Don't think I realised how much I had psyched myself up to plead/beg/bargain and I turned into a bit of a gormless buffoon at this point. The less said about that the better.
Massive weight off my shoulders.
Thank you for all your support and your stories. I can empathise with both the good and the bad endings.

Any update op?

HellenaHandbag I have got one of those key fobs because I was always losing my keys..you link it to your phone and attach the fob to your bunch of keys..then it will play an alarm if you can't find your keys..I think it's called smart things and inexpensive already it's been useful when I can't find them

If he booked one and you booked the other then could you feign ignorance of each other making a booking, and it was too late when you realised? I don't normally condone lying, but this might be acceptable....lol

I'm always scared of booking plane tickets the wrong way. I check about 6 times before I push buy, then I check the receipt.

I've always been so careful too! This might be a bit of menopause brain.

I couldn't believe I was so stupid, and amazed that I didn't have to pay the stupid tax for my mistake.
