Where has the bloody quality gone?

Inspired by another thread but didn’t want to derail.

it seems EVERYTHING and I do mean almost everything is shite these days. I feel so grumpy today. I can’t remember the last time I bought something and revelled in its quality or felt any sort of luxury. Cheap or expensive it’s all tat. Clothes, food, experiences. Even bloody boarding cards are printed on shit reciept paper. Everyone seems to be struggling with money and yet quality is going down and down. So is the size of things (article about celebrations shrinking once again today!)

what are some things you have or use that feel luxury? It doesn’t have to be expensive or on the contrary cheap, neither seem to matter these days.

I agree.

I like to get a really nice hand lotion and use it as a body lotion. The fragrance seems to last better.

I also use good perfumes and really good quality pot pourri from Italy.

Smells are important to me clearly lol

Real butter

Non polyester clothing when possible. I like viscose for jumpers as it doesn't bobble. .

GingerPaste · 10/09/2025 20:37

I agree. I’ve noticed that most things are or feel or look poor quality now. It’s been going downhill for a few years.

I think Europe and the US have better quality products somehow

CoffeeBeansGalore · 10/09/2025 20:58

The throws/blankets from Costco that are velvety on one side & sherpa fleece on the other. Thick, warm but lightweight. Lovely to snuggle into & under £20.

Perfume is a good one! I too have a thing with smells. I always splurge on perfume but have been very impressed with Zara’s range lately

Costco is usually one place you’re guaranteed good quality. Their deli has gone downhill but generally food and products are great

I was browsing in the clothes in TK Maxx last week and everything was appalling quality, compared to just a few years ago.

upseedaisee · 10/09/2025 21:10

It's not just chocolates that have shrunk! I bought a new coat online in a size bigger than my usual, from a retailer I have used before and it was tight, everywhere. I even measured it. Nope not true to size at all. Also once upon a time a coat would have a certain amount of overlap at the front to prevent gaping between the buttons. 1/2 an inch! half a bloody inch! How's that supposed to keep a draught out?
I'm returning it tomorrow and going to make my own.

Kohll · 10/09/2025 21:10

Tk Maxx, Zara, Costco and viscose? These are hardly renowned for good quality in the first place, regardless of whether they've got worse.

PauliesWalnuts · 10/09/2025 21:18

I find it really hard to believe that we humans are getting more and more advanced in so many things yet quality and customer service is getting shitter and shitter by the day.

I was like looking at what people were wearing in a busy town centre yesterday. Just dreadful clothes that don’t fit, made of shit materials .Its so depressing .
Maybe the answer is to buy everything abroad.

PossibleIm · 10/09/2025 21:25

@Kohll tkmax does has amazing stuff i got amazing cashmere

Fishplates · 10/09/2025 21:31

Agree with the clothes!

even if you’re buying ‘upper high street’ -yes the materials are better but the cut on everything is just shite

I genuinely don’t know how much wonga you’d need to look properly polished now 🤯 way past middle class income

jigglypuff7722 · 10/09/2025 21:32

I bought some random obscure bin bags from a corner shop the other day and I was so impressed by the quality. I hadn't realised how bad supermarket brand bin bags had got!!! I literally told everyone about it 😂

Also this! So depressing 😳

HangingOver · 10/09/2025 21:35

This is why I buy a lot of designer stuff second hand especially jeans and shoes.

RobustPastry · 10/09/2025 21:40

End stage capitalism + Brexit will do this to a country unfortunately

SeaAndStars · 10/09/2025 21:46

I totally agree.

I had a sort out of years/decades of paperwork recently. Even the paper pension and insurance companies write to you on has gone downhill. It used to be thick and quality, now it's so thin you can see through it.

Evenstar · 10/09/2025 22:02

My brother sent me a cashmere throw for my birthday and it was the first fabric item I have felt in a long time that felt expensive and luxurious. I couldn’t stop stroking it, even expensive clothing brands feel flimsy and cheap now.

Costco has great quality items. Particularly homewear

Where from? I bought cashmere socks from loop, and from the white company. Both diabolical. Tried a pair of 5% cashmere from primark and they were so much better!

I don’t think we even know what a good fit is now! We just accept any shape. And you know it because when you find a rare gem that fits your body you can’t believe your eyes!

designer also trash. Bought a £300 hoodie a year ago from zadig it’s the most misshapen baggy stiff rough thing ever!l after a couple of washes
