Supermarket 'Community Champions'

Do you know anything about them?

Have you ever had any contact with them in your community/supermarket?

Considering accepting a job offer to become one. It feels really positive, really flexible and fun, freedom to be creative etc. And a world away from my boring office job. But I'm a bit worried I'm not outgoing enough to do the role justice, I've never done any kind of fundraising before and don't know how to tread the line of not feeling too 'beggy'.

Would really appreciate all thoughts!

What supermarket is it? I can tell you about Morrisons but not any other I’m afraid

Yes. I volunteer with a charity where we regularly do fund raising events on supermarket premises (Tesco and Morrisons). The support we get from the supermarkets is fabulous, and the community champions have been brilliant wih setting everything up and supporting us.

I don't actually know what the role involves but the ones I have met have been lovely and helpful.

EwwSprouts · 09/09/2025 21:36

Know a few and they are more giving away than beggy. School visits, supporting local charities and groups and promoting the store as part of the community. However, I would be seriously concerned the job is going to last. Morrisons have recently cut the number of hours of their community champions, the one nearest me has been given extra hours in the bakery. Our Asda superstore hasn't replaced the last one who left some months ago.

Our local asda one seems to do her role very well. She’s always popping up here and there doing what seems to be worthwhile work with local community orgs.

YetanotherNC25 · 09/09/2025 22:53

Yes. They’re nearly always very happy friendly people who raise the profile of the supermarket/give back to the community as part of corporate social responsibility. They give away freebies to local charities, in return for some tagging and promotion on the socials. It’s not begging, it’s the opposite. You need to be happy being photographed constantly but apart from that it looks a good job. Fairly low stress as well as it’s the good stuff that benefits people.

It’s Asda.

Oh they also liased with us it was slightly different to morrisons,

Blingismything · 10/09/2025 09:09

I would imagine you would have to support the store in general tasks as well? Depending on how many hours are allocated to the Community Champion role.

ViciousCurrentBun · 10/09/2025 09:20

The two I have known through volunteering were very good communicators and roll up their sleeves types. They also did regular duties in the shops they worked in ASDA and Tesco.

CMOTDibbler · 10/09/2025 10:31

I’ve dealt with a CC at Tescos as they supported the sports events I was running. They were super helpful at helping me get food supplies and contributions for raffles. Other people I know were enabled to do fundraising activities at the store through them and they facilitated more publicity as well.
I know the lady I spoke with did general store duties as well

Thanks so much for these answers- really made me feel better about it!
