What do you wear to the office?

Calling office workers!

Asking this for a couple of reasons. Mainly because I like a poll, but also because I’m regularly astonished at sixth forms insisting on what seems to me to be a very outdated version of office wear - the business suit (and never mind all the jobs that require a set uniform!)

I’ve worked in offices for 30 years and have always been casual - jeans (not even “smart” jeans) and trainers perfectly acceptable.

So - please vote in the poll and comment if you like!

This is just for office workers.

I voted 'in between' but in reality it's all three! Some days I wear trousers, a blouse, and a jacket (although I like to pretend that I am consider myself stylish in some way, so formal but with my own edge/twist), sometimes smart casual, and sometimes dressed like I am today in leopard cropped jeans, an acid wash tee, a cropped Adidas jacket, and trainers! (Senior manager in the third sector, for context)

I totally agree that this notion of business suits as office wear is an outdated concept

Damn, I should have included an anything goes option!

Though I guess for me casual = anything goes. In my office, very very occasionally someone might wear a suit but smart casual and casual are the norm.

In the 90s we dressed formally, suits for men and dresses and skirts for women. Two inch court shoes that you could run in were the preferred shoe. That was in the U.S. in the corporate world. For the past 17 years I’ve lived in the U.K. and worked in academic administration and it’s very casual to the point of being scruffy.

Remingtonsteele · 09/09/2025 14:09

I wear a suit on my office days.

wfh I would be smart casual but on an office day I’m in a suit.

FancyCatSlave · 09/09/2025 14:09

No jeans but not suits either.

Mostly semi smart dresses or tailored trousers with a semi smart top or t shirt. Smart trainers are ok.

Interesting - I wonder why smart trainers are ok but not smart jeans?

Definitely an inbetweener here, there are people who are firmly on the casual side but they do ‘dress up’ a bit when seeing customers. I generally go for smart jumpers, wide leg trousers and trainers, smartish but comfy

RufustheFactualReindeer · 09/09/2025 14:27

So i work for a council but clothing depends on the manger of the department

so we can wear black jeans and trousers and smart tops, no blue jeans or t shirts

women can wear dresses and skirts…nothing too short

other departments allow smart blue jeans and smart t shirts

others are very very casual

its weird…and a bit annoying

KnitPurlTwirl · 09/09/2025 14:32

I work in a very formal office. Men only ever wear suits, women can choose between a suit or smart dress/skirt with a blazer.

Jeans, t-shirts and sneakers are not allowed and I couldn't imagine anyone wearing them to our office.

That sounds very annoying!

May I ask (broadly) what sector you work in? Is it something like finance or law?

I work for a gov dept and you have people all the way from wearing leggings and a hoodie up to a smart shirt and trousers or a dress.
Very rarely see anyone in a full suit. They’d really stick out.

strawlight · 09/09/2025 23:09

For the office, usually a dress and boots.

At home, pyjama bottoms and a nice top 😄

TartanMammy · 09/09/2025 23:14

I work for a charity, where anything goes. For day-to-day office most will be jeans and t-shirts. If external meetings people will be a bit smarter but a full suit would be unusual.

I still can't bring myself to wear jeans to work (millennial), so I do wide leg trousers and a tshirt/blouse and blazer or cardigan. Sometimes a wrap dress. Almost everyone is in trainers in summer and boots in winter.

SwallowsandAmazonians · 09/09/2025 23:15

My office is smart so I wear a suit or a smart dress and low heels. But this is very unusual these days.
I work for a property company. Most are smart/casual now and fancy trainers are fine.

TheLette · 09/09/2025 23:21

I work in a law firm but my clients don't wear formal clothes, so we don't either. I tend to dress more casual than usual if I meet with clients. I wear anything from Hobbs shirt dresses to trainers, jeans and a top! No one seems to care these days

TheBaneOfLife · 09/09/2025 23:52

I work in an emergency services staff role, you will 9.5/10 find me in the office wearing black leggings and a large over sized black t-shirt with some type of film reference or sarcastic one liner on it and trainers

tedibear · 10/09/2025 07:56

It’s got so much more casual since Covid. Previously men were very much in suits or at least shirt with suit trousers. Ladies wore smart trousers/top or dresses.

Now it’s very casual. I’ve even seen some of the female directors in trainers. Smart ones with nice trousers though. I’ve started wearing similar as so much more comfortable. My smart work dresses just stay in my wardrobe now. I still wear smart trousers with boots/shoes mainly. No heels anymore but I used to keep heels in the office. Some take the piss and turn up in a hoodie, cargos and trainers.

Twilightstarbright · 10/09/2025 08:04

I work in Finance. Smart tea dress with a suit jacket is my go to. Trainers for the commute.
