Small car - need ideas!

I’m looking for a second-hand small run-around car and it needs to have a hatchback boot big enough to fit a folded up wheelchair. The seat heights could do with being higher to make it easier to get in and out of. We’ve got a Ford Kuga as our current (shared) car and that’s ideal height but this car needs to be smaller for cost, ease of parking, day to day short trips with disabled family member.

Does anyone have any suggestions of cars that might meet this brief so I have a starting point for my search?

Thanks 🚙🚗🚘

What are the dimensions of the wheelchair? I drive a Puma which can take our wheelchair but there is a lip on the boot which could be an issue if you are lifting a chair in and out.

I have a Smart forfour. I have a large dog and fold the back seats down for her(they go totally flat ) and you could easily get a wheelchair in if you aren't carrying rear passengers. The rear seat pads also flip so that you can store tall loads so it could go in that way too. It's actually a very cleverly designed car for such a tiny vehicle. Seats are quite highly positioned in the front (I have back problems and it really helps)

I don’t know the dimensions off the top of my head but it’s a standard foldable wheelchair. A bit awkward but not overly heavy. I can lift it without much problem.
I’ll have a look at the Puma

I’ve never heard of this car so thank-you for mentioning it.

Being able to put the back seats down flat is something I hadn’t considered yet but that would work. I also like knowing that the seats are high too.

I’ll search on this as well as the Puma as suggested.

I got my parents' wheelchairs into the back of my Toyota Yaris with no problem, but a Honda Jazz was even easier (slightly higher at the back). And the passenger seat was high enough for them to transfer from the wheelchair fairly easily.

Edited to add: they are both extremely reliable little cars, and you can get hybrid versions of both.

Worth looking at a Honda Jazz - it has rear seats that flip up giving possible space to put folded wheelchair vertically in the back. The seats also fold flat for more traditional boot space.

I’ve had several Skoda Fabias and several Yetis. Brilliant cars! The Yeti is higher which is easier if you’ve got reduced mobility.
