Random question about biscuits

If you had to categorise what type of item a biscuit was, in terms of 'essential', 'treat', 'luxury' or so forth, (bad examples I'm thinking of the terminology "Store cupboard essentials"), what would you classify a Rich Tea biscuit as?
Please indulge me - I'm reviewing some potential quiz questions and am not sure the wording around the question is correct.

A rich tea biscuit is a disappointment.

Exactly. I’m not sure they ever featured in those biscuit tin selections, but if they did, they were the ones left till last every time.

A good digestive can be a fine thing (Dove Farm wholemeal ones), but Rich Tea are just a filler biscuit.

BeaLola · 09/09/2025 07:52

Biscuits are Essentials (but I try not to buy any as I would be the one eating them all)

A rich tea would be Basic, it would be the biscuit I eat if I've been poorly with magic tea. It's the one that gets left to last in a mixed tin being offered (not that you buy it in a tin - currently staying with a relative & they always have a choice of 3 in their biscuit tin - current options are: rich tea, digestive and round shortbread).

A digestive would be a good all rounder as great with cheese and good for dunking in tea.

The double chocolate M&S ones would be a Gold

They're an ingredient. Kept in the cupboard to make Rocky road

Do they still make the chocolate Rich Tea? They were good.

On the subject of Marks and Spencer's fancy biscuits does anyone remember the carrot cake cookies? They were marvellous and I think about them far too often.

Oo yes they use to do rich tea with chocolate on I’d forgotten that !

plain rich tea are the ones left among the crumbs at the bottom of the tin, not basic, not everyday, certainly not essential. They are the biscuits the everyone wishes someone else would eat

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 09/09/2025 07:57

I like rich tea when they've gone soft😋

MotherofPufflings · 09/09/2025 07:58

Certainly not a treat - more a punishment if anything. I'd rather go without a biscuit than eat one and I really love biscuits!

Really not a fan of rocky road made with rich teas - digestives are a million times better for this

I suppose all biscuits are treats rather than essentials, but they are hardly spoiling yourself. I quite like them but I'm not a big biscuit eater, crisps are my treat. I'd never though of having them with butter or cheese but it sounds tempting, after all digestives with strong cheddar are amazing.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 09/09/2025 08:06

Surprisingly moreish. I could never stop at one, especially dunked in tea.

You have to be a dunking ninja though.

Silverbirchleaf · 09/09/2025 08:10

A plain or staple biscuit.

It has its time and place, and I quite like them, but I wouldn’t call it essential.

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 09/09/2025 08:11

I can see my question isn't clear. I'll try a rephrasing.
If rice & pasta are considered 'store cupboard essentials ', what are biscuits? 'A sweet treat'? Or something else?

For my parents, they’re an everyday staple of their diet . For me, they’re a weekend treat (not helping).

EffectivelyDecluttering · 09/09/2025 10:08

Honestly that's still going to be ambiguous, could you ditch this question. I am a regular pub quizzer and ambiguous questions are annoying, people query them, it slows things down and generally causes more work for the quizmaster.

Yes, a sweet treat. For a biscuit that is genuinely nice to eat. I think your choice of the ineffably dull Rich Tea is confusing things. No way is that any kind of treat.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 09/09/2025 10:10

I bloody love a Rich Tea. They give so much and ask so little.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 09/09/2025 10:10

misses point of thread

I eat my basic rich tea biscuit with Lindt chocolate so it becomes a luxury biscuit

This is essentially a Choco Leibniz. Not sure I would call it the king of biscuits but indisputably an influential courtier

Toddlerteaplease · 09/09/2025 10:14

I love Rich Tea but they are definitely a basic biscuit.

Biscuits generally are a sweet treat. A Rich Tea could be a classic something or a traditional something?

PistachioTiramisu · 09/09/2025 10:18

At my school, you were allowed 2 biscuits with your mid-morning milk. They were either Rich Tea, Abbey Crunch, Lincoln or Nice - didn't really like any of them so wouldn't call them a store cupboard essential or even a treat! Cheap and cheerful??

Icanttakethisanymore · 09/09/2025 10:19

I don't buy biscuits regularly so I only really eat nice biscuits very occasionally. So for me, biscuits are treats but I wouldn't class a Rich Tea biscuit as a treat but then I probably wouldn't bother eating it.

It's a Basic Biscuit.

Sweet Treat.

SummerInSun · 09/09/2025 10:21

Biscuits are a treat. For some people they might be a treat they always have in the house (= obesity epidemic!), but they are in no way comparable to standard store cupboard essentials like rice, pasta, flour, etc.

maslinpan · 09/09/2025 10:22

A banal biscuit, but when it's in a cheesecake base situation it comes into its own.

Mikart · 09/09/2025 10:22

I never buy biscuits as im not keen.on them and would rather have the calories elsewhere. They are too claggy for me.
