Winchmore Hill / Palmers Green

I’m thinking of moving here from Zone 2 (currently very well connected, right next to the tube).

It’s just me, no DCs or partner to factor in, but my support network are dotted around London so I don’t want to make myself completely inaccessible.

From the new place I’d be a short bus ride/10 min cycle from the mainline station, or about a 10 min drive to Southgate. On paper it looks fine, but is this totally mad?

I need to be in the West End 4 days a week for work and then would usually see friends one other day in central. My thought process is that I’d cycle to the station daily, hop on a train to Highbury, and change there for Victoria. On bad weather days I’d just get the bus/taxi to the underground.

Does this sound realistic? Anything obvious I’m missing?

I’ve lived in London for 20 years and my stipulation has always been no more than 15 mins on foot from tube or train.

so this would be a no from me unless you’ve really got no other option

I guess the essential question is why do you need to move from zone 2? Nything more than 10-+5mins from the tube is a pain in the backside.

I lived in Bounds Green many years ago and it's definitely very suburban compared to Wood Green which is literally next door.

It’s so I can buy a house rather than rent a poky flat 😂

I’d rather buy a flat near the station than a house far away. Totally your choice obviously but that’s how I’d think about it.

MajesticWhine · 07/09/2025 13:57

I wouldn’t be happy with that commute 4 days a week. It sounds like a pain. Have you tried it door to door? How long does it take?

DelphiniumBlue · 07/09/2025 14:06

I’d want to be no more than 15 mins walking distance from a tube or overground station . That’s achievable in that area.

KateBridgerton · 07/09/2025 14:14

I know that part of London. The difficulty you'll have with the tube is that it doesn't always go straight from Southgate. The trains tend to stop at Arnos Grove and you can have a lengthy wait there and/or you're told to get on another train. Also, look up the bus service as it might be less frequent than you expect. I did a very similar commute but ended up walking as it was faster than waiting for the bus.

Teaforthetotal · 07/09/2025 14:21

Used to work in the area a good few years ago. It's really nice but travel connections to Central London aren't great. I think the piccadilly line is due for an upgrade but it's still some way off. Bounds Green/Bowes Park might be better although same train line. Perhaps it is better than it used to be when i used it.
Enfield Town might be better or other suburbs peripheral to London.

Thanks, this is so helpful!

my other target is Streatham: 5 mins walk to Streatham vale, 17 mins to Victoria and then jump on the Victoria line. Is that more doable?

I don't know Streatham at all but that sounds really well connected and I know it's a popular part of South London . Hopefully someone will come along who knows it. My friend lives in Croydon and seems to be really well-connected to Victoria and London Bridge by a regular, reliable rail service.

Nitgel · 07/09/2025 21:21

It's totally doable (Palmers green) southgate to West end is quick plus you can change to Finsbury oark gor quicker victoria line.

I'd much rather Streatham or Tulse Hill, than Winchmore Hill. Palmers Green is lovely in some bits. Hornsey may also be an option, but it's nation rail, same with Alexandra Palace.
