Hey πŸ‘‹ just after some opinions please πŸ™ so we have a 4yr old mixed breed dog at the moment, she’s really well behaved, also two house cats that the dog usually chases!
im a single Mom with two kids 9 and 14, I’ve got two jobs and doing a MSc part time from home. We’ve been offered a puppy, she’s a small breed but not house trained, we live in a 3 bed semi, is it going to be a handful or do you think I’ll cope?! Life is busy as it is so don’t know if it’s a step too far?!

is money no object?

BunnyLily · 06/09/2025 19:07

To be fair I’m already feeding 3 pets so one little mouth to feed would be fine and I can cover the cost of jabs.

Plus it’s the fact of where will she sleep? I’ve got the dog currently with us in my room, the cats have the run of the house at night, so maybe the kitchen as the floor is cleanable?

Op… sounds ghastly.

No, just no

When do you walk your dog?

You will need to be at home initially, so you are prepared to used annual leave during term time to settle a puppy?

Briningitallin · 06/09/2025 19:12

Honestly, I think you have more than enough on your plate. I don’t think you need another dog. I love dogs, I have a dog, one is plenty.

MiddleAgedDread · 06/09/2025 19:13

I think you’d be insane to even consider it!

Libre2 · 06/09/2025 19:15

Nope. That is all.

BunnyLily · 06/09/2025 19:16

Haha thanks ☺️ you’re probably right. I love animals and would have a house full if I had the time, I work from home mostly as one job and MSc is home based so that would be ok. Walks not a problem as I’ve always got time in the day.

would have a house full if I had the time,

and the space
and the money
and not two very young dependent children who presumably you want to save for their future

Nope, absolutely not in those circumstances.

Stickytreacle · 07/09/2025 06:47

If your current dog chases the cats then you are going to end up having two dogs that chase cats, and some very stressed animals.
The costs should also need to cover insurance and neutering, pet sitting etc. not just jabs.
I think you need to focus om the animals that yoi have, (and teach your dog not to chase yourother animals).

I wouldn't and we have 4 dogs! Ours are aged between 5-8, I work from home full time, children are grown and my husband is retired. We fostered a 12 month old puppy when we only had one 5 yr old dog, 2 weeks later we were more than ready for her to move on!! Pup needs a home that can fully commit, suggest to current owner they re-home through a rescue

I'm with most posters that I don't think your set up is a good idea for a puppy. I'm a single mum and we have a dog. Last year I had to spend Β£2,600 on an operation for her, because the month before (Dec) I didn't have enough in my account and it bounced my insurance payment.

It's an expensive idea and tears waiting to happen. I'd love another dog and don't have half the stuff on you do, but I know I can't afford to in case either need operations or special care. Let alone my actual child!
