To want a brand new car?

DontLikeMahoganyFurniture · 06/09/2025 16:39

Everyone always seems to say never buy a brand new car but if I end up getting one (my car is being a continuous twat) I really want something brand new. I don't care if it loses value after I've driven it out of the showroom because it's not something I'm going to get bored of and sell so someone else gets a bargain. I will look after it and keep it for its whole life span. It's only a "little run around" because I'm single and child free - happily - but even then they are still £15k these days!

The car I'm looking at is a lovely little Toyota Aygo X because they look like colourful little fun fair rides and I love them! Toyota is a very good car brand and I had one years ago, always regretted selling it massively since I let it go for the one I have now. This must be what it's like to get rid of a boring, reliable boyfriend for a total bad boy arsehole!

Do most people on here buy cars that are a couple of years old to save a few grand? I have the money but doesn't mean I can afford it easily if you understand. It will take a huge chunk out of my nest egg. But I feel like if it's brand new and I'm looking after it then it won't give me any shit for a few years plus it's a more reliable brand than the one I've got now.

Does anyone have an Aygo X?

I had an Aygo as a courtesy car, some time last year. I loved it, and would definitely buy one as a ‘run around,’. I also love brand new cars and am currently enjoying my latest purchase!

StressedEric · 07/09/2025 07:55

Don’t assume your brand new car won’t break down / have faults .

my current car ( brand new a year ago ) has been in for warranty work 4 times mid and the central IPad thingy just doesn’t work properly.

but if you want a new car experience that makes little sense financially but is important to you - then go for it- life is short .

Why does it matter who has driven it? Unless it’s been scraped or crashed it is totally immaterial who has driven it!

I had 2 occasions (1 test drive and 1 courtesy car) that stank of dog despite being scrubɓed

intrepidpanda · 07/09/2025 08:18

I have had my car from new for 15 years with very little issues it has worked out very good value.
Also remember if you are petrol you might want as long as possible left on it's life.

But surely OP would notice something like this while test driving or sitting in the car, and wouldn’t buy it?

Love the insight from the ex dealer on this thread.

Blackcat08 · 07/09/2025 08:40

@Arlanymorfrom your description of your car, I’m guessing a Skoda Octavia or Superb??

Iamintheshed · 07/09/2025 09:13

Good Luck OP I am with you on your intention. Every motor-bike car and van I have had has been second hand. I wish I could have bought just one absolutely brand new one.
If you only do low mileage, get petrol, diesel. EVs are worthwhile if you mainly charge at home. Why bother with Hybrid? It adds weight.
Have a chat about how long that model has been produced. I slipped up buying and old model Astra. It was an ex Motability so 3 years old, It should have been cheaper.
Cheers

Lots of reasons.

It may have been driven by a smoker, so there'd be nicotine smells throughout the upholstery, cabin air ducting/filters, etc however well it's been cleaned. Likewise it could have been used to carry a wet smelly dog. Smells linger for years, however much cleaning materials have been used during the valet.

It may have been badly driven, thus causing excess wear and tear to the drive shaft, clutch/gearbox, brakes, suspension, etc., even at low mileages.

Depreciation matters to me because of the price point of my preferred car. My current car I bought for £15k with 60,000 miles on the clock and it had basically been garaged for half of its life. It’s knocking on 150,000 miles now due to my job and other than needing a new clutch it’s been amazing and will keep going until 200,000 when I trade it in. Proper workhorse. From new with all of the spangly sportspak/entertainmentpak stuff would have cost me circa £40k. I couldn’t have afforded that and I didn’t want to go into debt. We all have to cut our cloth not just according to cost but also what car will fulfil our needs and how long we need to hold on to it for. But no, I wouldn’t buy brand new and for my choice of car I literally couldn’t, I am not that flush.

Similar to us. We spent £15k on an 8 year old car that would have been £50k new. We bought it out of savings so that was the most we could afford, and really like that particular car, far more than a newer, cheaper one.

Very interested in the make / model, if you are happy to share! I always wonder if these are the famed Skodas.

Audi Q3 - TFSI Quattro. I love it so, so much! My dad has a Skoda though - great cars.

Yes I suppose I see what you mean about smells, that's fair enough. But unless you are buying an older car, the badly driven issue doesn't factor in. It's a long term issue that catches up with the car later in life, not if it's a year or so old.

RaininSummer · 07/09/2025 19:58

I had a new car once. My Honda jazz . Loved it and kept it for 16 years so I don't think depreciation mattered a jot. Id you can afford it then go for it. But I wouldn't take loans/finance for it

Platypusdiver · 07/09/2025 20:00

Depends on the car. I noticed 3 year old Toyotas were similar price to brand new. I guess you can buy and drive away a 3-year-old one nearly immediately AND still have up to 7 years on warranty. But you have to wait months for a brand new one.

On the other hand, I looked at ford fiestas. They lost nearly half of their values in 3 years. Having owned an old one, I know why!

user2848502016 · 07/09/2025 20:01

I’ve never bought a brand new car mainly because I’m not into cars and just want something to get me from A to B.
I can definitely see the benefits in your situation though especially if you plan to keep it for years

Theyreeatingthedogs · 07/09/2025 21:24

I have an Aygo. The first car I have had from new, bought in 2017. I got a sweet deal. £12k less £2k scrappage for a clapped out Ka. I got 3 years interest free credit too. I'd recommend an Aygo as long as you don't have a lot of steep hills to deal with and can cope with the small boot/space.

charlieandthechocolatfactory · 07/09/2025 21:29

i bought the Omoda 5 2025, £260 a month on lease. First time I have bought a brand new car.
it drives likes a cloud.

CalzoneOnLegs · 07/09/2025 21:30

@Theyreeatingthedogs i was a passenger in my Aunties Aygo with a passenger in the back so three up, and we aren’t heavy 🤣 it was really struggling to get up a fairly insignificant ‘hill’ I think she changed down to 1st gear and it was screaming - almost going backwards 🤣 they are designed for the flat urban environments I suppose.

Silvertulips · 07/09/2025 21:36

Quick research show the difference between anew and 6 month old car less than 4K miles is are 5-7K

Meaning you save £1000 per 1000 miles.

Any engine should be solid and copy with 4K miles!!

But it’s your money - what would you do with 7K? Nice lump sum off your mortgage, retirement, holiday,

How long would it take you to earn £7K in your pocket?

Laflamablanca · 07/09/2025 21:54

I have an Aygo x. I got it in march this year. It is a second hand one, a year old. But still has 9 years on the warranty as long as it gets serviced at Toyota. I payed cash for it and it was reasonable in price. However the car is very uncomfortable on long journeys and it's obviously small. But as a run around it's great it looks good and it's quiet fun to drive( like a little go kart) it also costs about £38 to fill up the tank and gets 60mpg on long journeys. Which is so economical it's amazing. For a little car it's great.

Swissmeringue · 07/09/2025 22:25

We usually buy ex demo or a few years old, but if it's important to you, you can afford it and you plan to keep it a long time then I don't think buying new is the end of the world. We just aren't car people, so it's always about the most practical choice, but if it's giving you pleasure and enjoyment then there's value in that too.

Our "new" car is a 2021 VW Touran that only had 16k miles on it. It's deeply, deeply uncool but has loads of space inside, like I can comfortably sit between the kids car seats in the back and get all our camping stuff in the boot, but I can still park it in a normal parking space.

I bloody love it.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 07/09/2025 22:58

I recently bought a pre reg with 40 miles on it, at around 15% off list price. Honestly it's pretty much a new car, has that new car smell and is in perfect condition.
I tend to keep my cars for about 10 years so any depreciation isn't really a worry.
