We went to Iceland in February and barley saw it. Think we were just unlucky! It was an amazing holiday.

We live in the Highlands and see aurora many times all winter B

Finnish Lapland has a good chance. I missed them because I got too tired and went to bed! But everyone else saw them.

Levi, Finland. Great ski resort and inside the Arctic circle.

Yeah to be fair I got a really good view of them from my own garden last year a few times. I don’t just want to go for the lights but somewhere interesting in the areas that have a high chance. Wont be devastated if I don’t see them . I was looking at Manchester to Tromso earlier but I’m getting a bit overwhelmed with making decisions.

Tromso is a good bet. You can get an excursion from the city into the countryside.
Hurtigruten give you a northern lights guarantee on their Signature Voyage but you could do the coastal express too.

I mean I’m still blown away by last year’s display but would be nice to see them in their ‘natural environment’ 😂

We went to Karesuvanto in Finland in February 10 years ago. February is a good time to go because you get 8 hours of daylight. We were also lucky enough to see the Northern Lights.

It was one of the most memorable holidays we have ever had. Utterly brilliant.

zeddybrek · 06/09/2025 22:56

Another vote for Tromso. Booked an excursion out of the town where it was very dark so it looked absolutely incredible due to less light pollution.

RaraRachael · 06/09/2025 23:17

NE of Scotland.
We get them loads of times.

Son went to Iceland for aurora spotting. He saw none but had missed lots at home.

NuffSaidSam · 06/09/2025 23:43

We went to Reykjavik and were really lucky, saw them every night. They were amazing outside of the city (we booked a minibus tour that takes you out into the wilderness), but we also saw them from the roof of the hotel right in the city centre. Iceland was absolutely amazing outside, the lights were just a small part of it tbh.

I've never been to Tromso but it is on my wish list! I bet that would be amazing too.

Their "natural environment" is wherever they happen to appear 🤣

Haha you know what I mean . Not squatting down at the bottom of my garden in my pyjamas whilst I can hear my neighbours gossiping wondering if I’ve lost my marbles ( true story) 😂😂😂

Tromso and Finland are good bets.

Natsku · 07/09/2025 14:28

Anywhere north of the Arctic circle has a good chance but its unpredictable - there might be really high activity but its cloudy and you can't see anything. I once had my aurora app tell me I had a 99% chance of seeing the lights (and this was in Southern Finland) but it was pissing it down with rain all night so I saw nothing.

So best just pick somewhere that has other attractions you're really keen on, and then hope for a northern lights bonus. What kind of things do you like?

Edenmum2 · 07/09/2025 14:30

Tromso, it’s beautiful and very good chance of seeing them

Edenmum2 · 07/09/2025 14:31

We rented an Airbnb about an hour outside of tromso and could see them clearly from our garden. It’s absolutely stunning.
