Anyone had root canal treatment?

I’ve lost a chunk of tooth and a filling. The dentist says if the decay is too deep it’ll need either root canal treatment or extraction, the choice will be mine. It’s private (no NHS dentists taking patients where I live), and root canal work will cost much more than having the tooth removed. It’s far back so not visible. I’ve heard horror stories about root canal treatment. Anyone had it done without problems?

Yes, mine failed after 7 years. I wasn’t warned about the high failure rate.

Yes, I had one done in an incisor. Wasn’t too bad when when being done, but I’m now panicking about people saying they only last 15 years!

I had my first root canal done in 1979 and it's still fine.

PenguinSkater · 06/09/2025 07:30

yes, it was painful & had to be repeated several times, and ended up asking them to remove the tooth in the end. A couple of years ago I found myself in your position, and (probs because of the past, & cost) chose to have the extraction - the tooth was at the back, so not visible, and haven't missed it!!

Had one root canal done, on a front tooth (incisor). It was pretty fine, took two sessions, was a bit painful after the first session for a few days but not as bad as the pain I was having before. The actual dental work itself was alright, had plenty of local anaesthetic (was numb for most of the day!) so the only problem was how long it took, and how awkward it is when you're looking at your dentist for ages while they're peering into your mouth.

Thanks all.
Lots to think about, not least the £1000 plus that I’ve been told the root canal would cost !!

yes, absolutely disgraceful. Teeth generally speaking are worth saving as extractions have wider implications. I was in a situation where I had an infection and it wasn't just the cost but I didn't feel I could trust them at the practice here. So I went abroad did all my dental work and still only paid a fraction what I was quoted here even after flight and accommodation costs. Not to mention fantastic quality. NHS dentists are a disgrace at least the ones I had contact with. They do not do any work other than counting your teeth every 6 months to cash in the fee and if any problem appears all. they want to do is extract the tooth. Good luck and make sure you get good service for that exorbitant fee. maybe ask around and go with recommendations if possible.
Regarding pain, it should not hurt if anesthetic is done properly.

I've had a couple of root canals, they went really well, and it's nice not having further pain from them. Before those, I had an extraction, as I was going backpacking a week later and didn't have time to wait to see about root canal - much cheaper, glad I did with that particular case too. I've got a dodgy crown that's about had its day, I'd be happy to just extract it due to its position far back and having healthy teeth below it

nevernotmaybe · 11/09/2025 19:12

What is the issue you are asking about?

The procedure is painless, just feel strange from the scraping. No sedation or anything is needed, outside of any someone needs because they have issues with dental work in general.

There are rare complications that could happen after, but there are with a removal as well. Both are very painful, but somewhat rare and easily fixable.

Price is the only real factor, and if you care about keeping it obviously.

twobabiesandapup · 11/09/2025 19:28

Yes I did and had a crown in addition, also had mine done privately and it was absolutely fine, no issues/pain or anything neither during nor after!

Deedoo · 16/10/2025 10:25

@XenoBitch did it get infected or cause pain

BeAzureRaven · 16/10/2025 14:04

I don't have one and would never get one. Please read about them from a source NOT making a profit from them. (The book Judas Dentistry by Dr. Robert Yoho is excellent, but there are many others) They are linked to systemic disease as well as cancer, particularly breast cancer. They ALL fail. They are not preserving your tooth. Your tooth is dead. What they are doing is like putting a seal around a gangrenous finger and telling you they are 'preserving' your finger. Your gangrenous finger is dead. Your tooth is likewise dead. There is no longer any blood flow to it. It is a chunk of dead tissue in your mouth. It is impossible to remove all the bacteria (and the dentist will admit this) from the dead tooth before they put the seal around it. The seal cannot prevent the eventual leaking of the bacteria into your body.

What a load of total crap. Do some proper research.

MinnieMountain · 16/10/2025 19:44

So that’s why I had breast cancer. Silly me.

fairislecable · 16/10/2025 20:26

This is fascinating 🤨 I had my root canal done 30 years ago! I also had it crowned. It has given me no problems at all. I had mine done without pain relief (don’t like the numb feeling).

I have had Covid in 2021 do you think the dental work caused that too?

BarbaraKirksKaftan · 16/10/2025 20:30

I have had a couple done. Getting it was not particularly a fun time but the teeth a fine now. It did ache for a few days after.

Arthur Schopenhauer once said, “All truth passes through three stages: First, it is ridiculed; second, it is violently opposed; and third, it is accepted as self-evident."

I guess your comment falls somewhere between ridicule and violent opposition. Sigh.

Cakeandcardio · 16/10/2025 20:55

My experience was that I got the injection to numb it and couldn't feel anything other than pressure when the dentist was pushing. It might be unpleasant but not in any way painful. I didn't find it really bothered me and I was very afraid to go to the dentist for about 13 years.

BeAzureRaven · 16/10/2025 21:01

Remember when everyone ridiculed the people saying that cigarette smoking was linked to cancer? History repeats, but unfortunately, humans don't seem to learn. If there's money to be made by suppressing the truth, the truth will be suppressed as long as those making the $$ can suppress it.

An American website, from the country who voted in Trump and has conspiracy theorists controlling their medical legislation and departments. What a shock.

Conspiracy theory is stupid to believe. This remains the case even if it turns out to be true because a conspiracy is about a lack of any evidence or ability to prove it.

Give real medical peer reviewed medical articles if you want to make a point, and we will gladly read and learn.

As for people mocking it, this isn't some conspiracy where if you are ridiculed it means you or what you say is special. The list of things you are putting yourself on the same level if that was true, is astronomically embarrassing to be connected to.

Gingercatlover · 20/10/2025 17:12

Yes and it wasn’t done properly twice.

A chamber was missed resulting in the two teeth having to be removed at a later date.
