Autumn - what do you love about the changing of the seasons? 🍁

September has always been one of my favourite months. Warm sunny days but with a chill to the air in the morning and evening, the scent of woodsmoke in the air. I live by the sea and we have wonderful sunrises in autumn - glorious pink and orange skies.
I love an early morning chilly swim in the sea then warming up in the cafe with a coffee and cake or bacon sandwich.
The changing colours of the leaves, blackberry picking with the kids and making crumble with the apples that fall off our neighbours tree into our garden.
Having the fire on again on a chilly evening and lighting lovely spicy candles, enjoying a nice glass of red snuggled on the sofa (as opposed to chilled Rosé in the garden).
Tell me all the things you love about early autumn.

Putting socks and jumpers and slippers on again.

Feeling cold - feels like a novelty after all the heatwaves!

Enjoying soups and casseroles more.

There is another thread on this (don’t know how to link).
It is my favourite time of year. Snuggling under a duvet, nights drawing in, getting the fire on. And the foliage! I grew up in New England and it is spectacular.

The rain this morning

Doing the school run, the sky was so grey and dark and it was lashing it down

And I was so happy 😄🤎🍂

EllaPaella · 04/09/2025 13:21

Haha @mumofoneAloneandwell I’m not sure I can share the love of rain and grey skies.

I didn’t know there was already a thread about this - if anyone can link that’d be great. It certainly hasn’t appeared in my active threads.

The change to autumn clothes.
The change to autumn food.

Blackberry picking, jam making, packing sloes in gin
Buying a new sweater
The trees losing their leaves
Having the chimney swept in preparation for cold evenings 😊

I love autumn for all the reasons cited upthread - the changing colours, falling leaves, the chill in the air, and the smell of woodsmoke when my gardener burns leaves. Its a kind of hiatus between the brash shiny days of summer and the winter chill.

It is also a time of considerable nostalgia for me. My beloved grandmother died in November 1979 and I returned to uni as a mature student in September 1982. So a season when I recall great and important changes in my life.

WoodlandLove · 04/09/2025 15:18

So much. I just love autumn!
I love the light, the lower sunlight, I just think it gives a more pleasant light than the brash summer sun.
I love the reduction of social pressure.
The wild fruit to forage! Blackberries obviously, but also apples, crabapples, elderberries, haw berries (you can eat them and people don't realise), damsons, and I've struck gold if I find wild cherry plums or feral pear trees! I'm a keen forager, and autumn is my favourite time of year for it 🍎🍏
I love the change in the trees - those glorious colours 🍁🍂
Cosy clothes, more of an excuse to be a bit lazy with a book or a film, or even an entire box set! 🤭
I just love autumn (and winter too) I've been looking forward to it all summer!

This is a lovely thread, inspired by Nigel Slater's Christmas Chronicles. Lots of appreciation for Autumn.

I have my joules tweed blazer brushed for tomorrow. Jeans and a t-shirt just incase.
Funny thing I got cold earlier (I'm a bit poorly) and the DH brought me a cashmere jumper to put on. I'm not too hot.

I love everthing about autumn. The fading light, a nip in the air and the fruit. We're moving to a farmhouse and it's got an orchard! I can't stand the heat and we go away in November. Italy usually.

daffodilandtulip · 04/09/2025 15:44

It is actually the changing that I like. I look forward to warmer days, I get bored of the heat, I look forward to cosy fires, I get bored of jumpers. I'd hate to live somewhere where it was just ambient or just cold or whatever.

GlastoNinja · 04/09/2025 15:50

I get to wear my nice coat on the rare days that it’s sunny but cold and not miserable.

Other than that it’s grim

onwardandupwards · 04/09/2025 16:04

Collecting conkers with the kids, casseroles with dumplings in the slow cooker, blankets on the sofa and it getting dark earlier in the evening so my nosy neighbours can't see my deliveries!

carowils · 04/09/2025 16:09

It's cooler, shorter days, less bright sun light, hopefully some windy rainy days, frosty mornings, mists, fogs and with any luck snow. Autumn is beautiful to look at and I do enjoy the excuse to stay home and cosy up, under a blanket with a book and a nice hot chocolate. Bringing some favourite seasonal foods and recipes back into rotation. I also find I sleep better in autumn and winter so my mood and energy is better in general. I have an October Birthday then it's Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas all to look forward to. I don't love a lot of the Christmas prep and shopping for gifts because I never know what to buy for people.

Ahh, so jealous of you growing up in New England!

It’s one of my “places I would visit in a heartbeat” - but I don’t do aeroplanes☹️ It is incredibly beautiful, nature in its finest hour!

BexBissell · 05/09/2025 13:39

Just to add, I can see a row of trees from my window at work, and they are changing every day! I never realised it happened so quickly. Maybe it’s because everywhere is so dry still? I race into work each morning, like a nutter, just to see the changes! 😁

jonthebatiste · 05/09/2025 13:48

Everything everyone has said, and the first cold breeze or wind, the sort that makes your eyes water. It makes me feel alive. I feel free in autumn, winter and spring. I find summer oppressive, claustrophobic and dictatorial 😂. Theirs is no option but to be hot outdoors. But in autumn I can be warm (put more clothes on), or cold and it’s my choice. I feel more connected to earth either side of summer.

EllaPaella · 05/09/2025 19:31

I came home from work tonight and it’s a lovely sunny evening but with a distinct chill in the air. Just about to run a lovely hot bath with ylang ylang bath oil and unwind with a glass of wine.. I’d never have a hot bath in summer so another little luxury I’d forgotten.

Not just yet (it’s still fairly warm here) but able to wear jeans/jeggings and my nice boots again. And lovely warm jumpers.

In September, making apple chutney from DD’s windfalls (10 jars done 🙂), Delia’s mincemeat still to make, if I’ve got enough jars…

Once it’s a bit colder in the evenings, my ‘signature dish’ substantial vegetable soups, every one different, according to what I’ve got - typically at least 10 plant items. They have the added advantage of being not only very healthy and nourishing, but also cheap to make!

Chipsahoy · 05/09/2025 19:58

I love every month, each season is special but my favourite months have to be May and September.
I love that it’s still mild in the day but first thing and last thing there’s a chill. I love that the deer are out in the mornings and evenings again, although not so much them throwing themselves in front of my car. I do love watching them as I eat my breakfast.

I love the golden glow of the sun, the late summer flowers and how it’s still light in the evenings but dark by the time I go to bed!

Hairshare · 05/09/2025 20:23

I love the threads with OP asking if everyone has put out their autumn decorations yet, and posters saying they’ve never heard of that and is it American.
