I've been researching my genealogy for the last ten years or so. Having revealed a few skeletons in the long lost closet, what are the strangest or most shocking things you've found lurking in yours?

1901 census -infant grandfather, his two older bothers and their mother in a workhouse whilst their father was living comfortably at home with his mother. As far as I can see the family never lived together again and by the time of the 1911 census my grandfather was living alone in a residential school for the deaf. My great grandfather disappears from the records, can’t find a death certificate or any census records after 1901. In 1911 my great grandmother is living as a domestic servant in another family’s home and in 1921 she is living with her eldest son and his family. My father knew little about his father’s family, but did say that a man turned up at his father’s funeral claiming to be his uncle, never seen before or since.

Ooh, exciting! @NapoleonOfNottingHill Are you English?

I am 50% British Isles and 50% Dutch but I live in England.

I also have many criminals. A load were deported to the US in the 18th century, which explains huge amounts of people with my weird maiden surname all over America.
My grandparents were first cousins...which never seemed too shocking wen i was growing up, but does explain a few things now to be honest

Got 2 instances of men marrying the sister of their first wives after they had died. And having kids with both sisters. Also got a woman who mysteriously managed to have 2 children a number of years after her husband/their father died. Far too long ago to have been the result of frozen embryos!

This is very common in my family tree.
