Long story short she isn’t living with her mum, doesn’t want to live with us as we live far away from her friends etc so is at another relatives house. She wants to use our address to claim uc, will it affect my child benefit or my DD’s dla ?

Yes - don’t allow her to use your address!!! Make sure you contact UC to let them know she doesn’t live with you is my advice!

UC will want to check her bank account, ID etc to verify who she is, that she doesn't have more than the allowed capital etc This will also mean verifying her address. For the first 13 weeks of her claim she will have to attend weekly meetings at her local Jobcentre which means local to her address. If she's using your address which is a long way from where she's actually living this will present a problem.

In a word, no, don't let her use your address. Why doesn't she want to use her real address if everything is legit?

Long & short is

She can use it as a care of address, but not as her residential address.

She could always claim she’s of no fixed abode though.

What is a care of address ? She is 17 aswell so not even sure she can claim it ?

we also have a mortgage offer on the table and I’m worried it’ll affect that !

Why can't she use the address she is actually living at?

Do not let her use your address unless she lives with you. If found out both you and her will be investigated for benefit fraud, and even if you are innocent it will still cause a huge amount of stress (and arguments). Don't put yourself through that.

BenignKipper · 03/09/2025 18:51

Er, no because it is fraudulent

A care of address is just an address that you want your post sent to, not your residential address.

Yes, 17 year olds can claim universal credit under certain circumstances eg Can no longer live with parents.

Is she homeless and sofa surfing?

No she’s at her friends house and her Nan’s house, and she can come here but she doesn’t want too

Why doesn’t she claim from her Nan’s house?
Not a good plan to claim from your address if she does not live there - could affect your other benefits and there may even be a question about child benefit for her as she is under 18. Is she in education at all?

RaininSummer · 03/09/2025 19:28

If she is 17and actually has a home to go to and not estranged etc then she shouldn't be claiming. Is somebody getting child benefit for her?

Yes her mum currently but for some reason she is adamant on not going to college and getting a job. So that will stop soon. Her dad is very much well at least she wants to work, which yes I get that but I think she should go to college and enjoy herself before becoming an adult so soon and live the reality of the daily slog !

I’m not sure, I did say I’m sorry but I can’t allow you to use our address for that and said claim from your nans. So not sure. I think it’s because her mom will flip if she finds out.
