Teenage car insurance - anyone with recent experience.

Blimey, I am getting some huge quotes shopping around for car insurance for
17 year old DS. Has anyone got any experience with this. So far we are looking at old 1 or 1.2 cars such as a ford ka or a Citroen around the £1000 mark. Insuring for anymore bumps the cost up. I think we will also have to keep the excess high as well. Pretty much the value of the car.

So far I have worked out that commuting is more expensive. DS works full time but is picked up from our nearest town 5 miles away and driven to site. I am not sure if him driving from home to town to be picked up is classed as commuting. Anyone know the answer to this?

When we buy the car, register the car in either my name or DHs name but with the insurance being in DSs name might work and also having 2-3 named drivers on the insurance can help. Can anyone confirm?

I think keeping the mileage for the year low for the first year can work too. Does anyone know what happens if you go over the mileage quoted? Example say we put down 3000 miles for the year but he does 4000 how does that affect insurance?

Thanks for any help and tips you can give.

You will need to say he is commuting because he is
It better to overestimate your mileage by 1000 miles not under because once you go over it’s invalid

17 year old new drivers are very expensive to insure there’s no way around it

getting a back box, saying he won’t drive after 11pm or before 7am helps

Thank you. He will drive before 7 am as pick up in town is 7 am for an 8 am start. I may have to continue with the commute drive into town for a year until he has some experience.

Have you tried getting quotes with a black box, that brought it down to a more reasonable price for my DS.

My son passed his test in February this year. He has a vw polo 1.4
He bought the car (£1000) and is the registered owner and keeper. He is the main driver and I am on his policy as a named driver. He is a school student but has a part time job so has commuting to that job on his policy.

its worth adding different named drivers - if he adds his dad rather than me it’s another £400!

He doesn’t have a black box, his excess is £400 and the policy £1240 for the year. This is with Admiral. We did ring a broker but they couldn’t match and we did have wild variations up to £6000.

You will need to say he’s commuting because what he’s doing is classed as commuting, it doesn’t bump it up by too much but it will be cheaper than saying that he’s not!
Look at the black boxes as that can bring it down.
I don’t believe who the car is registered to makes a difference (could be wrong) but he will have to be the main driver, however I am a name driver on ds insurance as that brought it down.

Apart from shopping around I don’t know what else will bring it down that much tbh it’s eye wateringly expensive. We looked at insuring a 12 year old Ford KA 1.2 for ds for when he passed it was £3200
We went with a different car in the end insurance was £4200, however now he’s been driving year it’s come down to £2200.
So if you can get through the first year, barring any claims, it will come down after the first year

That’s an amazing price for a new driver for that car. We couldn’t get any cheaper no matter how hard we tried. Maybe it’s because of our address? It’s certainly not a high crime area or even a medium crime area, but it would be classed as more rural as we live outside a village so it could be that. All I know is it is extortionate!
