Preferably black. With a hood. For DN (21) going into first professional job. Holy grail I know …

Do adults need proper waterproof coats if not like, hill walking or something? I just use a brolly..

Oooh that's hard to find! How professional are you talking? I'm early 30s and work in HR so do dress fairly formal. The issue I had trying to find a waterproof formal coat was that they seemed to warm for autumn so now have 2, one for autumn the other winter. I have Hilltop II womens waterproof jacket from mountain warehouse in black, was £40 on sale years ago but they still stock it. It actually looks much more professional and smart in person, especially with a nice bag. It's practical and fairly thin with a hood! I've had trenches and wool coats but just not that practical for everday office wear in the rain!

Thank you for the replies! Think professional office market town, client facing in the rain. Doesn’t want a happy hiker sort of coat. She’s asked me to help but really stumped to find proper waterproof. Will look at the suggestions now.

I have a very very thin Barbour waterproof, which I use in summer for those warm wet days. Mine is pink (!!!) but I am sure I saw dark colours as well. It’s fab quality and never lets in the rain. Like other posters, I usually find proper winter waterproofs too warm, and prefer to wear normal warm clothes with a light rain proof layer.

Bargain option: Without a hood the uniqlo trench coats are actually properly waterproof despite claiming only water resistant. Them with a lightweight umbrella look pretty good. With a hood their blocktech coats definitely dont look like your average hiker coat but might be slightly more casual styled than you want, personally I think they still look pretty smart

Otherwise the best bet is probably the seasalt Janelle.

What about Ilse Jacobsen? I have the Hornbaek version. Properly waterproof, simple design and it’s fitted so it looks smarter. It’s a bit spendy but I’ve had mine for four years and it looks as good as new despite being used a lot

Jack Murphy is great for very smart waterproof coats. They're an equestrian brand originally. Everytime I wear mine (the Erin) I get stopped and asked where I got it. Not cheap mind.

Look at Barbour. I'm wearing a long black waterproof one right now, love it.

Sorry for not coming back! Thank you for ghe great ideas. She’s gone for a Uniqlo quilted job with a good found on EBay which is roomy enough to wear over a jacket or big jumper. It’s showerproof but will squirt with waterproof stuff.
