Help! Need a recipe book

For the last 20 years, our family weekly menu has revolved around a pretty limited set of meals that autistic DS can eat and provide a somewhat balanced diet. DS is now partly moving out, so we can finally eat a wider range of meals. DH is fully responsible for food - planning, shopping and cooking. But he's not that interested, imaginative or particularly skilled in terms of finding and cooking some new recipes.
Can anyone recommend a good recipe book for day to day, family dinners - more interesting than sausage pasta bake, but not requiring masses of specialist ingreedients? Preferably mostly meat based.

That looks pretty good - that's the kind of level. Not massively keen on the pre rolled pastry, sausages and tinned fish, but nothing's perfect, right?!

There are literally millions and millions of recipes online. Have you tried searching?

Some sites are really clever and you can filter if you don't like certain foods or you input what you have in the fridge and it spits out recipes based on that ingredient.

@PegDope He needs some inspiration before he goes shopping. I often use the BBC Good Food site, but he just finds it overwhelming, gives up and cooks what he always has. We need a book for the kitchen counter that he can thumb through...

RecipeTinEats website

She has done a book, called Dinner, if you want a physical book. But there is SO much more on the website.

Her recipes are much more reliable than BBC good food IME, she road tests everything and they are family crowd pleasers rather than obscure or requiring fancy techniques or ingredients.

@minipie That looks absolutely perfect - thank you!! And it might encourage him to use the website for more inspiration.

We like Mediterranean food, I came across this book by Meliz Beeg (and her previous book) and can highly recommend it. There are spices needed but they are used throughout the book in the recipes so won’t go to waste. Both DH and I have enjoyed cooking the recipes. https://amzn.eu/d/aJUzaP2

Mary Berry usually has straightforward recipes in her book. You can’t go wrong with Nigella either

Fab - thank you! The Meliz Beeg book looks lovely.

Have you thought about a recipe box subscription? Meal planning & shopping is such a drain. We find we eat a much better variety of meals with Gousto

Hairy Bikers are always good!

MargotJane · 02/09/2025 14:13

Some great suggestions here - thank you! We've tried a recipe box, but I'm not at home consistently (work from home but also work away a lot), so it gets too complex.

Nigel Slater's early book Real Fast Food is very varied, quick, straightforward and most recipes take 30-40 minutes or even less.

Just wanted to update this thread - I ordered the RecipeTin Eats book (Dinner) and it's been absolutely brilliant. Standard of dinners has increased massively. Just ordered 'Tonight' for a Christmas pressie for DH.
