Do you think stamp duty will be abolished in the next budget?

We are just going through the process of buying a house and due to complete around the end of October, is it worth stalling by a couple of weeks to see if there are any changes because the stamp duty money would make a huge difference to us?

Nope

Given that Angela Rayner went ahead with buying her £800k flat in Brighton, I think you're safe to go ahead. I don't think Rayner does much that goes against her personal interests.

@Travelcrazy it's funny how our brains process things completely differently

I did see those articles or something like them. But in my brain, it literally just translates to "higher taxes" with some kind of stupid stupid rebrand.

So it didn't appear in my head as "potential abolition of stamp duty". If you know what I mean.

if we end up with no tax on having to move, or less tax when we move home, I would be pleased. But the way I feel about things, I just think it will be replaced with something worse.

I certainly wouldn't delay a move over it.

The only way I can see it being abolished is if it replaced with an even more punitive land value tax.

So while I think stamp duty is a terrible tax, I fear the alternative could be even more expensive.

It’s quite strange - id always assumed I’d buy a bigger house at some point, but the tax burden associated with doing so is just so massive (London) I just can’t see myself doing it now.

I suspect a lot of my generation will be the same - just never try and ‘move up the ladder’ as it’s too expensive / psychologically the tax bit is too ridiculous.

I think it will be yes - I reckon it might be 4% on sale instead over £200.,000 with any stamp duty paid on purchase offsetable to reduce it -

We are just going to complete ASAP after weighing it up thanks everyone
