Do you give your teen DCs a clothing allowance?

I would still buy their school uniform and essentials (and same for toiletries) but they would have to buy their own clothes and makeup, non-essential toiletries. Does anyone else do this? How much do you give? Do you have any other exceptions?

Yes. DS17 gets £200 a year. All basics are already bought so this is for anything extra he wants and the amount I would normally spend on school uniform.

I’m not sure how it would work with events that they have to attend but would not choose to like family weddings or religious events. Also I’m very soft and would probably end up giving them more money when they ran out.

We don’t do a clothing allowance but the rule is we buy them what they need, as long as it is reasonably priced. If they then spot something they want but don’t need (so they already have enough hoodies, say) then it comes out of their pocket money.

This is more how we work.

She usually has pocket money and / or birthday Christmas money she can use if she wants.

For events that I'm basically telling then they need to attend then I give money if I feel they need a new outfit, otherwise they wear something they already have.

Abroad, so never had school uniform, but I would buy basics needed and any "designer" or fancy stuff came from monthly allowance.

My 14 yo DD gets £250 month.

she has had an allowance since she was 12 yo (at a lesser amount)

She is responsible for all of her needs bar school uniforms/trips/toothpaste/feminine hygiene/winter coat/sun cream

She is able to budget well a she is able to plan her purchases and social activities.

she spends £7.50 per week on a teen CrossFit class per week and £15 every two weeks on a 1-2-1 reformer Pilates session, she pays for her Spotify account and tops up her dinner money for school around £15 per month as she usually takes food from home.

She has £400 in premium bonds, £300 in regular savings and then whatever is in her current account as she budgets in her savings too.

She has a DLA award of £412 every 4 weeks and around £50 of her monthly allowance comes from this. The remainder is spent on her private therapy sessions.

If it was something needed then I buy it. DS has two jobs as well, so he doesn't run out of money, he has to budget. He pays for driving lessons and then if he goes out or wants food treats that we don't have at home. He gets a set amount each week for lunches which covers basically a supermarket meal deal but if he wants something more extravagant he pays himself. I pay for things like his bus pass, phone and toiletries. There's a lot of things he offers to pay for himself, like stuff needed for college but I cover those too. He just covers his wants.
