Did you get wrong?

Seen a video on a video platform lately that said only children from the northern regions of the north east "got wrong" off their parents when they did something naughty as a child. My partner is from a more southern town said he would "get into trouble or get a telling off. But "getting wrong" doesnt even make sense. What did you grow up saying?

I've never heard that expression in my life (and I'm quite old). I come from the South West and we got told off, got a telling off or got into trouble. I agree "got wrong" makes no sense. Maybe the video platform was talking nonsense - wouldn't be the first time.

I've only ever heard this in the north east.

EchoedSilence · 31/08/2025 13:40

We would 'get done' for misbehaving. As in 'you will get done for doing that'

JazzyContemporaneousNotes · 31/08/2025 13:41

It's used in Norfolk as well, perhaps it's an eastern thing rather than a northern thing?

Rightandwrong · 31/08/2025 13:42

I was born and grew up in the north east of England
I definitely know the expression " get wrong" amd have heard it used.

We didn't say it in my family - get into trouble was the expression we used- but definitely " get wrong" is something I understand.

TortoiseMantle · 31/08/2025 13:44

North East and definitely got wrong but I remember saying it to my scouse boyfriend in my 20s and he didn’t have a clue what I meant. Was the first time I realised it was a NE expression. Much like a thread on here when foaming was in the title and I realised, after being very confused reading people’s responses, that foaming was also a NE phrase.

I grew up in Hull and don't remember it as a child. But my parents are not from Hull which definitely had an impact on my exposure to local dialect. As an adult I live in County Durham so it's definitely on my radar now!

RedRec · 31/08/2025 13:52

I got wrong in Norfolk.

Deepfried · 31/08/2025 13:55

Yes in Norfolk we got wrong. We also got done by the teachers for rule breaking

Happyher · 31/08/2025 14:02

‘Got done’ in S Yorkshire

Serendipetty · 31/08/2025 17:18

My ex was from blyth and often said 'I'd get wrong if I did that' and 'don't say that in front of my mum, you'll get wrong'.

TheSummerof25 · 31/08/2025 17:21

Never heard of getting wrong or getting done.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 31/08/2025 17:25

Definitely a Norfolk /cambs thing. I moved here from South Yorks, where it was "you'll get done for that" to Norfolk where its "you'll get wrong" its bloody weird

What does foaming mean?

Delatron · 31/08/2025 18:06

I’m from Yorkshire and have never heard of this. Is it from far NE? Like Newcastle?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 31/08/2025 18:11

I'm from the south west and had never heard of 'getting wrong' down there, now live in North Yorkshire and it's not used here either. In fact I actually thought OP had left a word or more out of her thread title, I was that confused!

TwinklyBird · 31/08/2025 18:15

I’m from Durham, and yes definitely use the term ‘get wrong’.

BIWI · 31/08/2025 18:16

My grandparents were in South Shields, and my gran frequently used to say “Eee, you’ll get wrong off yer mam!"

Oh yes we say ‘get done’. That must be the Yorkshire way!

Ihaveneedofwaternear · 31/08/2025 18:21

Yeah, your mam will be foaming and you'll get wrong. I'm from North Tyneside, but when I went to York for uni a realised there were so many things I said that other people had never heard of!

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 31/08/2025 17:27

What does foaming mean?

Furious

MelonElla · 31/08/2025 18:27

I'm from the north east and still say 'get wrong' now.

abracadabra1980 · 31/08/2025 18:28

I ‘got wrong’ many, many times 🤣
