Why does my teenage son get such joy from scaring me half to death?

He creeps into the kitchen, utility etc when I'm in there, like a bloody ninja then laughs like a drain when I leap 10 feet in the air. One of these days I'll whack him with the laundry basket or whatever.

He thinks it's hilarious of course. Is it just mine? 😂

Do I need to preface this with 'lighthearted'? In case someone tells me he's a psychopath? Surely not ...

It’s called being a git!

my OH does this to me daily they think it’s hilarious

mind you, he did it to FIL who clumped him

PigeonPie · 31/08/2025 12:16

Mine have been known to do that too or alternatively stand behind a closed door they know I’m about to go through 🤣

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 31/08/2025 12:21

He does it because you react the way you do 😂

Ha, I do this to my mum, it’s cos she screams 😂

dodobedo · 31/08/2025 12:41

Get your own back by doing it back to him.

ladycardamom · 31/08/2025 12:44

Yeah my 15 yr old does this too. I made the mistake of falling asleep in the car whilst waiting to pick him up from work. My heart still hasn't recovered from the fright of him banging on the car roof.

itsgettingweird · 31/08/2025 12:47

Mine found it hilarious until the day I (accidentally) dropped his dinner on the floor and he had to eat an alternative of toast. 😂

TubeScreamer · 31/08/2025 12:51

My 17yo finds this hilarious too

TitaniasAss · 31/08/2025 12:53

I should say that although he's a teen, I've probably made him sound younger than he is, he's actually 19 so a bloody adult! 😂

My ds does this too, except it’s not done intentionally, I’ve normally got the radio on, and or deep in thought about something, the design of my kitchen means I’ve always got my back to the door, and suddenly I get arms around me with ‘love you mum’, which makes me jump out of my skin, I’ve warned him not to do it when I’ve got a knife in my hand! Dh stomps around (just because he seems unable to walk quietly not because he’s grumpy….although he can be grumpy but then he clumps rather than stomps!) so I always know when he’s around, and dd always talks to me as she comes in. But ds is just as just master of stealth🥷!

pinenuts75 · 31/08/2025 12:55

Mine used to do this he’s 24 now and moved out, I kind of miss him doing it 😂

Mines 21 and still finds it hilarious - it’s not going away soon 😂

IHaveRunOutOfIdeas · 31/08/2025 13:17

We do this to each other in here. I will often wait outside a room and scare the living daylights out of them, that’s if I’m not caught out from laughing first.

TitaniasAss · 31/08/2025 13:18

Mine doesn't do it to hug me, he literally stands right behind me with a massive grin on his face because he knows what's about to happen. I've really tried not to react but he gives me such a fright. He walked away this morning laughing like a hog saying 'every time mum'. 😂

PullTheBricksDown · 31/08/2025 13:20

I'd be tempted to get up early and wake him up by screaming in his ear the next morning. Do that every time he does this to you and he might go off it.

Balloonhearts · 31/08/2025 13:31

Prank him back! Do the floating toy one, that's always amusing.

Harrysarseinthedogbowl · 31/08/2025 13:37

Why do you put up with this? I'd be telling him next time you do that, you pack your bags and move out.....and I wouldn't be joking.

You reminded me of this hilarious video

They're both brilliant 😀

I love Peet and his mum - the sound-effecting videos are so funny Grin

Did you miss the bit where OP was being light-hearted? Hmm

GinBlossom94 · 31/08/2025 13:56

I do that on a daily basis to my DSs, they try and get me back but fail usually! They are older than your DS 😂

sashh · 31/08/2025 14:01

Make him wear a bell around his neck.

ginasevern · 31/08/2025 14:31

I know this is lighthearted but he's a bit old for this at 19 surely?

SliceofTosst · 31/08/2025 14:43

Loads of people do this to me because I jump so easily.

From both men and women of all ages.

Edited

Why does fun have to have an age limit?

I still love making DH jump - often by standing behind cupboard doors 😂
