Gluten free cookie decorating

LeonMccogh · 30/08/2025 10:34

Any recommendations for the best place to buy cookie decorating supplies (sprinkles, icing, small sweets etc) for someone who is gluten free?

I’m due to run this as an activity for a group in a few weeks and want to make sure everyone is catered for. Thank you!

Those things are usually just sugar aren't they? You can make icing with butter and sugar or icing sugar and water. Just look for ones that are just made of sugar and colour? Or use chocolate or dried fruit?

You're safe enough with icing!

It's the actual cookie that's the concern. Coeliac often prefer that stuff comes put of a packet in front of them tbh.

Just check the ingredients on the back of the decorations or google it. Are they coeliac, allergic to wheat or just gluten free?

Mini M&Ms a (green packet) are GF.

I bought sprinkles from Morrison's recently that are GF. That's just where I do my shopping rather than visiting specially.

Watch out for things that look GF from the ingredients but have a 'may contain wheat' warning. Don't buy those.

Don't often use them these days but its a lot easier these days (they used to use gluten in alot of the sprinkles). I used tesco own brand last year and had quite a variety to choose from. Obviously check the individual ingredients lists (and also for contamination).

Sprinkles are actually a nightmare as you'd think they were just sugar but lots have wheat starch in them and its not like one brand is OK. M&S percy pig sprinkles are OK, their jazzy sprinkles are not. Dr Oetkar unicorn confetti sprinkles are OK, others of theirs aren't.
The Dr Oetkar rainbow decorating icing is GF.

They are just gluten free, their parents haven’t listed coeliac disease on the medical or dietary form for the event
