Gp job on Monday or 111/a&e combo

Dd is 23 with autism lives at home is reasonably independent but not at a 23 year old level. Its relevant i promise. She's just let me know that she went for a wee and it hurt and there was blood ofc its on a Friday night. There's no temperature and no pain when not peeing. DD isn't the best at remembering to meet her needs so I think, and she wont confirm or deny, that shes been forgetting to drink, and caused herself a urine infection. The last time she did this was 10 years or so ago.
So I've said to drink lots to try and flush whatever it is out and if no improvement we will see the gp on Monday. Obviously if it gets worse in that time eg pain temp etc I will phone 111 and get her seen eventually. But now im second guessing myself, should I be doing more, phoning now? Dr google says they need to see a gp immediately but i dont think that is accounting for the fact that there isnt one. Also does anyone have any home remedies for possible urine infections/cystitis?

Wait till the morning and 111 might get you into an out of hours GP?

Kneeslikethese · 29/08/2025 22:46

Maybe get her to do a sample and ask your pharmacist to dip test it. They can give antibiotics and see people for urine infections now.

Starlightnights · 29/08/2025 22:46

You could try going to a pharmacy. I believe they are able to potentially give antibiotics for a UTI if they think they’re required. If not you could at least get advice.

I’d contact 111 rather than waiting until Monday

WetBandits · 29/08/2025 22:46

Many pharmacists can treat UTIs in women under the new Pharmacy First scheme Smile have you got a big pharmacy near you that you can go to tomorrow? If they can’t help, 111.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 29/08/2025 22:46

Actually pharmacist is a good idea! I’d forgotten they do that now

Twistedfirestarters · 29/08/2025 22:46

Daft question but she hasn't eaten beetroot has she? Maybe I'm just stupid but I've scared myself a couple of times with 'blood' in my urine before remembering I had beetroot.

If not I'd personally let her sleep tonight and ring 111 in the morning. I am not medically trained though.

fashionqueen0123 · 29/08/2025 22:47

I called 111 on an evening for this before. I was seen and home in 3 hours with a prescription and meds but I managed to get to a pharmacy before it shut.

But now I think you can go straight to a pharmacy tomorrow morning for a UTI. So no need for GP. And don’t wait until Monday!

charliehungerford · 29/08/2025 22:48

As far as I’m aware a pharmacist can prescribe oral antibiotics for some conditions and I think a uti is one of them.

Oceandriver · 29/08/2025 22:48

Yes you can go to a pharmacy for a UTI now! 111 would be next. I definitely wouldn’t go to A&E unless she’s seriously unwell. It would probably even wait to the morning.

Gliblet · 29/08/2025 22:49

If it's cystitis then bicarbonate of soda in water (about a teaspoon to a glass) will help to relieve the pain when she pees which in turn will help to keep her drinking lots to flush it through - it tastes revolting though and most importantly you can't be sure it's cystitis and the best option if it's come on suddenly (or you can't be sure if it's come on suddenly or not) is to get at least a phone consult for her via 111.

A&E if she starts feeling dizzy, sick, feverish, unusually sleepy, has sharp/shooting pains or starts complaining of lower back pain.

deblcouen · 29/08/2025 22:50

Is she 100% sure the blood is in her urine? Just as she has no other symptoms. I would probably try a pharmacist in the morning given the lack of symptoms.

SeriouslyStressed · 29/08/2025 22:57

I would ring 111 as the absence of pain isn’t that reliable in people with autism, especially if they have issues with sensory issues (interoception)

It does say it only started tonight and it also hurts to pee so there are symptoms

Nousernameforme · 29/08/2025 23:00

I think pharmacy in the morning is the best bet as long as she doesnt develop any other symptoms in the mean time. 111 will just try and get her to a&e.

Plenty of water and cranberry juice tonight then pharmacy tomorrow. This has just happened to my just turned 18 DD and the pharmacy sorted her out very quickly and easily

Twistedfirestarters · 30/08/2025 08:55

I'm an idiot. I completely misread it as not hurting when she peed, god knows how. Ignore my rambling about beetroot. I hope she's ok today and if not you can get her something easily from the pharmacist.

You can do the 111 questionnaire online to see what it will advise, save the long time on hold
